We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated, committed individual with a background in HPB/general surgery nursing to join our dynamic and friendly HPB (hepatobiliary) Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist team based in University Hospital of Wales. The HPB Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist role is varied and very much focused on the holistic care of patients with a HPB cancer, and supporting their families/carers.

The HPB Cancer CNS team is the tertiary centre for all HPB cancer services for South and Mid Wales, meaning patients are directed to Cardiff and Vale for all cancer procedures. The team is made up of 2 band 7 and a band 6 CNS. The wider HPB team includes four consultants, their medical team and their secretaries. Working together closely with the team is of upmost importance.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 HPB Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist role requires good organisational skills, with a commitment to the development and provision of high quality nursing care. The post holder will use clinical expertise, leadership and management skills to provide specialist HPB cancer support, nursing advice, support and information to patients (in-patient and out-patient) and their carers/loved ones. The CNS would play a significant role in setting standards/guidelines, undertaking audits, service improvement initiatives, education of others and disseminating good practice. The post holder will need to be flexible and enthusiastic to meet the needs of an evolving service and developing role. A willingness to expand HPB cancer nursing knowledge is essential. The post holder will also work as an important member of the Multidisciplinary Team, acting as a keyworker for a group of patients.

Job responsibilities

To provide up-to-date evidence based care to patients with suspected or diagnosed HPB cancers by undertaking nurse-led clinics.

To ensure that the service remains efficient and fit for purpose by auditing practise and exploring new ways of working in line with current national/international guidelines and local policies.

To act as a key worker supporting patients and their families through diagnostic investigations, communicating results, breaking bad news, providing patient-centred follow up care and signposting to relevant services.

To work within a multi-disciplinary team, liaising with other health care professionals as indicated. To actively participate in weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings.

To support the rest of the HPB CNS team managerially in terms of annual appraisal, rostering, provision of in-house education and signposting.

To be responsible for providing ongoing education, training and support for staff within the UHB.
