We are seeking a Band 6 1.0 WTE Speech and Language Therapist to take on this exciting fixed term 12m maternity cover opportunity within the Speech and Language Therapy team of the Evelina London Cleft Service. This post will provide an excellent opportunity for a speech and language therapist to develop specialist skills and knowledge in the area of Cleft Lip and Palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction for speech.

As a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in this area, you will be responsible for supporting the wider Cleft Service in ensuring that our service users' needs are met through the delivery of high-quality cleft care.

Main duties of the job

This post is one of a team of Specialist Speech and Language Therapists in the Evelina London Cleft Service, a Managed Clinical Network, (MCN). The post-holder will be a member of the multidisciplinary Cleft Team based at Evelina London Children's Hospital and will also attend various outreach clinics at other sites within the MCN. The post-holder will provide a specialist clinical service assessing, diagnosing, treating and managing communication disorders related to Cleft Palate and Velopharyngeal Dysfunction. The post-holder will have opportunities to participate in audit/ research and development in the specialist area and will also contribute to clinical training of speech and language therapy students at an undergraduate and postgraduate level.

About us

Our directorate consists of ten services for children including eight surgical specialties, intensive care, and theatres. With an annual income of �80 million, we see over 50,000 outpatients and perform over 8,500 procedures a year. We deliver care in our specialist children's hospital - which will soon include our new day surgery centre, due to open in early 2022 - in the community, and in other hospitals across the South Thames Paediatric Network. We are unique as our paediatric intensive care unit offers an integrated specialist paediatric intensive care transport service which operates across the South Thames network, which includes King's College Hospital and St George's Hospital. We have a workforce of 700 of all disciplines, including 88 consultants.

Skills, Knowledge and Ability

Essential

  • Knowledge of educational provision for children with speech, language and communication impairments
  • Ability to communicate highly complicated/ emotive information at all levels of understanding, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to educate, empathise, support, negotiate and motivate including where cooperation is not guaranteed
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Good time management and organizational skills
  • Understanding of the differing needs of multi-ethnic communities in our Managed Clinical Network
  • High level sensory skills to facilitate auditory discrimination of speech sounds/ voice quality at the highest level to ensure differential diagnosis of communication problems


Desirable

  • Knowledge of cleft services within the UK
  • Knowledge of cleft palate related speech disorders and their management
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working and ability to contribute to team discussions
  • Knowledge of instrumentation used in diagnosis and treatment: e.g. videofluoroscopy, nasoendoscopy.


Previous experience

Essential

  • 3 years post graduate experience working as a speech and language therapist
  • Support and supervision of speech and language therapy students
  • Informal/formal training of other professionals


Desirable

  • Experience working as a SLT with children/adults and their families with cleft palate, velopharyngeal dysfunction and/or craniofacial anomalies
  • Participation in audit /outcome measurement


Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified Speech & Language Therapist holding a recognized degree/diploma.
  • Registered member of RCSLT
  • Registered member of HCPC


Desirable

  • Evidence of study/interest in speech therapy intervention for cleft palate/VPD, e.g. attendance at short courses, regional training days, membership of Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies CEN and any evidence of relevant CPD.
