We have two exciting opportunities to join the dynamic and expanding Paediatric Occupational Therapy Team based at Leicester Children's Hospital, with a permanent and a 9 month fixed term contract available. Both Band 6 OT roles are available as full time and will rotate between acute general paediatrics and cardiac, including EMCHC.

We are looking for passionate and motivated Occupational Therapists with an interest in working in acute paediatrics someone with excellent communication, prioritisation and organisation skills to join our Paediatric therapy team at University Hospitals of Leicester. We will support you to develop your skills within the four pillars of clinical practice, with in-house training, supervision and appraisals as well as access to CPD funds to support external learning opportunities.

The Paediatric Therapy Team of Physiotherapists & Occupational Therapists, works with patients of Leicester Children's Hospital which includes the East Midlands Congenital Heart service at Leicester Royal Infirmary. In this post you will work with children from 0 - 16 years of age (19 years for patients with complex needs) with a variety of medical conditions and needs. The Paediatric Therapy team works across a wide range of specialities including Paediatric intensive care, respiratory related conditions, high dependency, Cardiac services, Surgical and Medical conditions, Trauma & Elective Orthopaedics, Oncology, Neurology and Children with Long Term Ventilation needs.

Main duties of the job

You will be providing therapeutic assessments and interventions to patients to promote their independence and facilitate optimum function whilst working alongside a diverse MDT.

You will work alongside an established Occupational Therapy team comprising three acute Clinical Specialists, an Outpatient Clinical Specialist, one rotational Band 6 and a rotational Band 5 based at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

You will have many opportunities to develop your clinical skills within paediatrics as well as your supervisory and leadership skills, supervising junior staff and deputising for the Band 7 Clinical Specialists when necessary.

You will hold a varied and complex clinical caseload and work alongside patients, parents and carers in a sensitive and professional manner, to meet the patient's needs.

You will have an active involvement with service development, audit and research opportunities in addition to providing teaching and supervision to Band 5 Occupational Therapists and students.

Job responsibilities

This exciting role will involve:
  • Providing key therapeutic assessments and interventions to patients in order to promote independence and facilitate optimum function for individuals working with patients, families and carers and the multi-disciplinary to achieve agreed outcomes for patients.
  • To work with the Clinical Specialist OTs to ensure the delivery of Occupational Therapy in the Paediatric Team in an efficient and effective way within a fast and pressurised environment.
  • To increase and consolidate existing clinical knowledge in a specific clinical setting
  • To develop basic managerial and supervisory skills
  • To carry a clinical caseload and work to Service priorities.
  • To work with patients, carers and their families in a sensitive and professional manner
  • To liaise with other professionals for the benefit of the patient
  • To work with those who may have complex needs including physical, psychological and communication difficulties.
  • To liaise with colleagues/ and work across site if appropriate in order to ensure the provision of a seamless equitable service
  • The Therapy Department provides a seven day rostered service and the successful candidate will work on the weekend and bank holiday rosters within the paediatric and surgical wards.


Person Specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma/BSc O.T.
  • HCPC Registration


Desirable

  • Practice Educators course


Experience

Essential

  • Recent significant clinical experience at a minimum of Band 5 level


Desirable

  • Experience in relevant clinical area


Analytical and Judgement skills

  • Demonstrates evidence of flexibility/initiative and risk management
  • Demonstrates awareness of own abilities and needs
