Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Kingston upon Hull City Council operate a joint mortuary service providing mortuary and post-mortem facilities for the county of East Yorkshire and other coronial districts.

The service undertakes approximately 1400 post mortem examinations annually consisting of, standard coronial, forensic, independent and defence cases .The mortuary has very varied workloads and can be a busy and fast paced environment..

The mortuary service has a vacancy for an enthusiastic Anatomical Pathology Technologist to join our expanding team. You will be based at the Hull & East Riding Public Mortuary at Hull Royal Infirmary but may be required to assist at our satellite site when required.

As a qualified and experienced APT, you will be expected to take an active part in day to day mortuary and bereavement service operations including work undertaken in the isolation/forensic suite. You will be able to demonstrate experience of all operational aspects within the mortuary environment, including-, admission, release procedures and classification procedures, external examinations, post mortem procedures and various administrative duties. You will also be expected to undertake HTA compliance audits.

The nature of the job is such that it demands high standards of integrity and particular emphasis is placed on confidentiality.

Main duties of the job

As a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technician, the post holder is responsible for performing a wide range of technical/scientific procedures to aid pathologists/clinicians diagnose a cause of death, identify outstanding clinical issues and identify the effects of treatment. This work is undertaken in the post-mortem rooms including the Category III Isolation area.

The post holder is expected to undertake all duties and responsibilities associated within this specialist area of work including:

The post holder is expected to both interpret and apply clinical judgement in respect of risk assessment via classification procedures (admission) and in the conductance and recording of external and internal examinations. In addition the post holder will also assist in the training and development of more junior staff, particularly trainees and will provide technical advice to other users of the mortuary and bereavement facilities.

The post holder is expected to discharge technical duties either working alone at one of the body storage facilities or as part of a small team. They will be required to partake in the on call rota to provide a 24 hour call out service.

This will include working unsocial hours and will require the post holder to undertake work outside of normal working hours when on call.

Working within a reactive service the post holder will be required to be flexible and to ensure continuous service delivery when required.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Holds the Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology / Certificate and diploma in anatomical pathology technology


Experience

Essential

  • 2 yrs in post as Anatomical Pathology Technician/ Trainee
  • Experience of working within public and/or hospital mortuaries..
  • Experience of forensic, high risk Post mortem
  • Experience of working within a HTA licensed facility and maintaining HTA standards.
  • Experience of involvement of out of hours on call service


Desirable

  • Experience working within a combined Mortuary & bereavement Service
  • Previous experience of training and supporting junior staff and other health care / clinical staff

  • Must hold full driving licence
  • A flexible nature and ability to cope with changing demands of a reactive service
  • Must be able to communicate with other professionals at all levels.
  • Responsible and mature attitude.
