The Lead Nurse will provide credible and visible nurse leadership both within the clinical group and as a key member of the corporate nursing team. Together with the Group Director of Nursing and AHP's, Group Clinical Director and Group Director of Operations, the Lead Nurse will be responsible for the supporting the delivery of the organizational strategy, the annual operational plan and financial performance and in addition, provide clear operational leadership in patient flow / discharge planning.

Within this context, the Lead Nurse will work within the group on quality, safety, and patient experience, along with workforce oversight and planning. The role will also include any corporate objectives that reflect the Chief Nursing Officer portfolio.

The Lead Nurse may be required to lead on corporate issues outside their immediate sphere of responsibility in order to achieve the corporate objectives of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively and positively contribute to the successful overall performance of the Trust.
  • Proactively, meaningfully and consistently demonstrate the Trust Values in everyday practice, decision making and interactions with patients and colleagues.
  • To be an ambassador for the nursing profession within and external to the trust and to uphold the NMC professional practice standards outlined in the Code.
  • To take a lead in the management of specific nursing functions across the trust's group structure as agreed with the Group Director of Nursing, and AHP's, Group Clinical Director and Group Director of Operations.
  • Become proficient in UHCWi methodology, commissioning and leading quality improvement and instilling a discipline of daily management and standard work.
  • Provide senior nurse leadership within the group, working alongside the Group Director of Nursing and AHP's to deliver high quality performance.
  • Together with the Group Director of Nursing and AHP's, Group Clinical Director and Group Director of Operations, ensure that local objectives are aligned to the trust organizational strategy and quality strategy.
  • Provide professional leadership across the group and line manage senior nurses as indicated.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Work alongside the Group Director of Nursing and AHPs, in leading the implementation of the UHCW strategic nursing and midwifery objectives at group level and taking organizational leadership, as appropriate.
  • Support the nursing contribution to quality governance and assurance within the group and upward reporting to include risk management, SIs, complaints and other outcome measures.
  • Ensure all nursing actions from SIs are communicated to the nursing workforce and processes for improvement and learning are systematically implemented.
  • Together with the Group Director of Nursing and AHPs, Group Clinical Director and Group Director of Operations, identify any outstanding issues of regulatory compliance e.g. CQC and ensure remedial / robust action plans.
  • Support for the oversight of operational delivery, to include effective patient flow and discharge planning across the group services, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with the Group Director of Nursing and AHPs, to establish a schedule for confirm and challenge of all quality metrics (within the group) to include Ward accreditation, quality dashboard, IPC dashboard, safeguarding activity etc.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation, learning and development, using UHCWi methods andembedded through role modelling (for example), senior nurse rounding and production boards.
  • Analyse and interpret data to inform practice and assist in the determination of policy and professional/ practice development.
  • Dissemination of knowledge through engagement in report writing, and reviewing, taking full responsibility for technical accuracy and reliability and being sensitive to the wider implications for dissemination
  • Undertake proactive horizon scanning for either developments relating to Trust work or opportunities for Trust involvement around health issues.
  • Maintain affiliations with professional organisations linked to national direction advising UHCW CNO as appropriate.
  • Provide clinical and professional leadership to those performing Advanced Practice roles within Trauma and Neuro Services.
  • Proactively and positively contribute to the achievement of deliverables through individual and team effort. Manage the production of the required deliverables and control risks.
  • Support the Trust culture of collaborative, flexible cross-team working and commitment to delivering quality services and outcomes, which support the Governments policies on public health.
  • Work closely with the Group Director of Nursing and AHPs and Associate Director of Nursing for Education & Research, to implement local systems for professional education compliance and best practice.
  • Support the Group Director of Nursing and AHPs with the nursing contribution within the group to transform care through the use of new technologies / ICT solutions.
  • Establish processes for financial control of the nursing budget, advising the group of any variation to plan identifying risk for remedial action.
  • Work with the Group Director of Nursing and AHPs, to co-design and support bi-annual safer staffing reviews to inform workforce development / re-modelling opportunities.
  • Ensure effective and efficient E-Rosters across wards and departments within the group to ensure KPIs are met, including appropriate supervision of learners and support staff.
  • Together with the Group Director of Nursing/AHP, Group Clinical Director and Group Director of Operations, support the delivery of identified efficiency improvements and costs savings to meet the Trusts annual financial plan.
  • Together with workforce experts support Group Director of Nursing and AHPs, lead on local recruitment and retention strategies and monitor their effectiveness, developing the academic status of the workforce.
  • Ensure feedback secured via the national staff survey, and any local staff surveys, are acted upon to deliver a continuous improvement in staff experience.
  • Together with the Group Director of Nursing and AHPs, Group Clinical Director and Group Director of Operations develop a local approach to patient experience, reflecting the trust quality strategy / objectives.
  • Take a lead role for the group in reviewing patient experience data, to include annual surveys, PLACE assessment, complaints, incidents, FFT etc for action, working closely with the central Quality Department.
  • Lead and co-ordinate safeguarding activities within the group, to include services for vulnerable patients (dementia / learning disability/ End of Life etc) while considering equality delivery standards.
  • Identify opportunities for patient engagement and work collaboratively with patients and service users to deliver care quality improvement.
  • Actively engage with the Trust volunteer service and Patient Partners Programme to support local delivery.
  • Together with Communication department colleagues, develop strategies to share learning and celebrate success, to include social media opportunities.
  • Actively contribute to internal and external forums and patient experience events, working with the trust Engagement Team.
