The post holder will participate in a pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician rotational training programme.

The rotation will be split between medicines optimisation on the wards and Dispensary including rotating through distribution, stores and purchasing.

A qualified pharmacy technician or pharmacist will supervise duties.

The student must take responsibility for self-development and timely completion of Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians within the required deadlines set.

To ensure that infection prevention and control (IPC) is an integral part of service delivery

Main duties of the job

Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect)

To counsel patients on their medication, where sometimes the patients may have difficulty in understanding, or English may not be their first language.

To undertake dispensing of prescriptions for inpatients and outpatients, including controlled drugs and clinical trials.

To assist with the maintenance of the Emergency drug cupboard

To assist in the replenishing of Emergency boxes.

To check stock levels in accordance with departmental procedures.

To participate in ward and department topping up, including maintaining records and checking expiry dates of medicines.

To maintain adequate stock levels of dispensing sundries

To ensure that IPC requirements are identified in all service developments and clinical policies and procedures with appropriate involvement of the IPC team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Policy development

To work following S.O.P.s at all times and to inform the line managers of any concerns about procedures.

Service development

To assist colleagues with the development of the service.

People management

Responsible for self-development.

To attend study days and courses, as part of the training programme.

To assist in the training of new staff as appropriate.

Communication

To work as part of a team

To participate in the dispensary late duty, and weekend and bank holiday duties as required.

To participate in departmental meetings.

To refer any complex problems to the appropriate member of staff.

To deal with stock queries from hospital staff, when appropriate

To deal with delivery queries from suppliers when on rotation in stores, when appropriate

To deal with queries from patients, when appropriate

To deal with queries about medicine when on rotation in the Medical information section, when appropriate

Resource management

To be responsible for the secure storage and distribution of stock to wards and departments

Information management

To maintain accurate data on the computer system

To use the computer system to produce labels in the dispensary, to assist with an efficient stock control, to assist in the purchase, receipt and issue of medicines, to deal with stock returns and to assist with prescription pricing.

To abide by the Trusts core behaviours for staff and all other Trust policies including standing financial instructions, research governance, clinical governance, patient and public involvement, codes and practices, and health and safety policies

To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.

Person Specification

EDUCATION & QUALITICATIONS

Essential

  • 4 GCSE's Grade C or above, including English, Mathematics and science subjects
  • All staff are expected to take responsibility for their own continual personal development


Desirable

  • NVQ 2 - Pharmacy or equivalent


EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
