An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Head and Neck department for a motivated and dynamic Band 6 Registered Nurse to join our Thyroid Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist team for a two year fixed term. You will be the patients key worker, providing holistic care and support throughout their surgical and oncological treatment for their Thyroid Cancer as well as their long term follow up. As the patients advocate you will be with the patient from initial diagnosis, responsible for attending MDT meetings and ensuring all investigations are undertaken and reported in a timely manner to ensure gold standard care is delivered throughout treatment. You will support patients from diagnosis, during their treatment on post operative wards and in oncology treatment rooms as well as part of their long term follow up in both consultant and nurse led clinics. You will be required to demonstrate your autonomy with complex cases and have the initiative for when appropriate to refer back to consultant care. As the largest unit in the country caring for patients with Thyroid Cancer you will be able to articulate the vision for this growing service and how you will, alongside the band 7 and wider MDT deliver optimum care to our patients

Main duties of the job

As a Thyroid Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist you will be responsible for your own patient case load on both Queen Elizabeth and Heartlands Hospital site, where you will be the patients key worker, ensuring a supportive and timely treatment pathway. You will act as the patients advocate in all clinical settings and provide inclusive, compassionate holistic care. You will work closely with the UHBs cancer services departments to ensure patients are signposted to and provided information on all opportunities and support services available. You will work collaboratively with all members of the Thyroid MDT, other CNS teams within the general Head and Neck department, the Nuclear Medicine team and post operative surgical and oncology ward teams.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • *Evidence of post registration CPD / post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to FHEQ Level 6
  • *Willingness to undertake Non-Medical prescribing and Non-Medical scan request course


Desirable

  • *Non-Medical prescribing Qualification
  • *Advanced communication course experience


Experience

Essential

  • *Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
  • *Significant post registration experience, with evidence of passion/ enthusiasm and knowledge for the associated area of specialist practice
  • *Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence
  • *Demonstrate specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality
  • *Experience and enthusiasm for teaching/assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting
  • *Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment
  • *Demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice-based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the NMC


Desirable

  • *Experience caring for patients with Thyroid Cancer
  • *Experience in service development
