Main duties of the job

• Clinical Leadership: Act as a clinical resource in IV therapies, demonstrating expertise in IV medication administration and vascular access devices.
• Policy Development: Contribute to the development and review of clinical guidelines and policies to ensure safe and consistent practice.
• Mentorship and Training: Provide mentorship within the specialised area of IV therapy, supporting and supervising the practice of nurses.
• Patient Care: Deliver IV therapy treatments in patients' homes & clinical settings, managing and coordinating daily and weekly treatments, and support patients in self-administration of IV therapy.
• Collaboration: Work with acute trusts to identify patients suitable for early discharge, reducing hospital readmissions and enhancing patient independence.
• Problem-Solving: Offer support and advice on issues related to vascular access devices, ensuring effective patient care.
• Communication: Communicate effectively with patients, their carer's, the primary healthcare team, and other key stakeholders on a range of complex healthcare matters

Job description

Job responsibilities

• Deliver elements of the IV therapy education programmes (both practical and theoretical knowledge and skills).
• Work with staff and managers to support training needs, participating in the one-to-one teaching, supervision and monitoring of staff competency in IV administration.
• Participate in the support, training, and education of patients inself-administration of IV therapy if appropriate.
• Deliver IV therapy treatments to patients in their own homes and clinical settings manage and co-ordinate daily/weekly treatments in the allocated IV clinics.
• Provide support and problem-solving advice regarding issues with vascular access devices to reduce the potential re-admission of patients to hospital.
• Integrate IV therapy care across all the care settings to ensure cohesive and timely delivery for patients.
• Support community nursing teams with hospital/GP referrals for IV therapy.
• Provide active clinical leadership and mentorship where appropriate.
• Support the IV Therapy Nurse Specialist in the development of new services to meet the current commissioning agenda.
• Participate in the development and implementation of care pathways and standard operating procedures

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered nurse qualification/degree or diploma
• Evidence of post graduation continuing education

Desirable

• Evidence of a range of clinical competencies appropriate to the role
• Infection control module
• Chemotherapy module

Experience

Essential

• Minimum 3 years post registration relevant clinical experience Band 5 or above
• Clinical experience of the management of vascular access devices
• Clinical experience of IV therapy delivery and management
• Teaching/assessing in the clinical setting

Desirable

• Experience of project/service development
• Evidence of recent professional development
• Formal/classroom teaching experience

• Holds UK driving license and has use of car
