Are you looking for a neuro specialist band 6 role? Do you want to work in a regional specialist unit for neuro? Building skills in acute neurosurgery, neurology and neuro oncology. Well then look no further!

Based at the regional centre for neurosurgery, neurorehab and major trauma you'll be working within our integrated teams of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy Assistants to deliver excellent patient-centred care. You will also work closely with the wider MDT to promote integrated assessment, intervention and rehabilitation as well as in partnership with our community colleagues to provide a high quality, seamless service for our patients.

Working with a wide range of neurological conditions will equip you with a multitude of transferrable skills including cognitive and functional assessments, across acute services whilst providing rehab to patients awaiting NRU. You will have the ability to develop and use established skills as a neuro specialist Occupational Therapist who is able to truly treat patients holistically.

Main duties of the job

The acute Neurosurgery team are a Specialist Regional Service providing assessment and early rehabilitation following neurological trauma, surgery or disease within Lancashire and South Cumbria. The team prides themselves on providing the best possible complex neurological care for patients whilst increasing their independence, in the acute neuroscience settings.

Within neurosciences a normal day starts with the MDT handover and prioritising your day, then cracking on with assessment of function and cognition, treatments across the five wards and discharge planning.

Active involvement in continuing professional development is a key requirement, alongside a commitment to promote clinical governance and evidence based practice and therefore we encourage you to take advantage of available opportunities to develop your practice. Alongside trust training we also have a comprehensive core therapy cognitive and perceptual training programme and therapeutic moving and handling training. We invite in externalcompanies/individuals to support with training as well as our own fantastic team members putting on training sessions or talks.

You will be fully supported by having regular supervision and in-service training, as well as team meetings to keep up to date with any important information, to share ideas and to work on service developments.

Job responsibilities

You will carry a varied, complex caseload which could include anything from setting rehabilitation goals, assessing for a wheelchair or organising a patients discharge plan.

We know we are biased, but we really want to convey this is a fabulousopportunity, in which you will be fully supported by the existing therapy team and the Professional Leads.

Duties to include but not limited to:
  • To directly support the delivery of therapy assessment and treatment to patients.
  • To communicate and collaborate with all Core Therapies Service stakeholders
  • To provide leadership and management support as required
  • To support personal and people development
  • To support service development and planning.
  • To help to ensure the health, safety and security of users of the Integrated Therapies, self and colleagues
  • To support the Clinical Governance and Quality agenda within Core Therapies.
  • To support equality of opportunity and access within Core Therapies for both staff and patients.
  • To provide and use information to support admin processes and patient care.

There is also a band 6 Occupational Therapy forum that meets each month that provides a space for discussion with your peers as well as presentations and training from a range of speakers.

Like all NHS trusts we recognise the need for enhanced provision and Core Therapies are looking to move towards 7 day working. As such youll be expected to support this model of care when it is implemented.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of CPD in relevant specialist area.


Desirable

  • Post graduate study relevant to Neurorehabilitation and Neurology
  • Member of a Professional Body
  • Clinical Educator
  • Bobath Training
  • Brain Tree Training


Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Range of clinical experience within relevant acute specialties
  • Clinical experience in neurological specialties (neurosurgery, neurology, neuro oncology, etc)
  • Knowledge of conditions pertinent to this area and current national guidance.
  • Experience with complex assessment, treatment and discharge planning
  • Experience of functional assessments and treatments
  • Experience of joint/interdisciplinary working with other members of the MDT
  • Experience in completing a variety of standardised assessments including cognitive assessments
  • Experience in managing a complex caseload in an acute, fast paced environment.


Desirable

  • Experience managing patients with behavioural, mood and/or cognitive problems
  • Experience of intervention with acutely unwell patients and creating treatment plans which incorporate SMART patient led goals.
  • Experience with the use of and ability to advise on therapeutic handling techniques and how to apply these in function
  • Experience with assessment/provision of wheelchairs and/or specialist seating
  • Experience and working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (2005)
  • Knowledge of the current NHS Agenda
