As a band 5 staff Nurse within the Outpatients team you will work alongside a well established team of colleagues to facilitate the smooth running of clinics within the appointed times.

Treating patients according to their individual needs and prescription, acting as their advocate.

The role will also require the supervision of the nursing team on a day to day basis, referring to the department manager when necessary and will require some time taking charge of the department in the absence of a senior member of staff.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisin for an enthusiastic Registered Nurse to work as a Band 5 Staff Nurse within a well established Outpatient Service, based at the University Hospital North Durham. This is a general Outpatient Department, serving a variety of medical, surgical, orthopaedic and specialist outpatient clinics. You will have excellent communication skills and an ability to work well as part of a team or independently where required. As the Registered Nurse on duty you will be expected to manage the day to day running of the department in the absence of the departmental sisters, and supervise junior staff and students when required. The role would suit a Registered Nurse with post-registration experience which can be utilised within the clinic setting.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide nursing assistance and technical support within clinics.

To provide advice to patients with in the department enabling optimum treatment, via telephone enquiries and through health promotion information and/or information leaflets.

Teaching new skills to patients to manage self-care.

Dependent upon experience, act as a mentor to students.

Supervision and training of unqualified and newly appointed staff.

Ability to respond appropriately, giving support to distressed patients, relatives and carers during and following consultation.

Supervision of the nursing team, referring to the department manager where appropriate.

Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Trust Personnel and Health and safety Policies.

To carry out and supervise prescribed treatments having evidence based knowledge, and ensuring patient information consent, to gain optimum recovery/ patient compliance.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered General Nurse with current NMC PIN


Desirable

  • Familiarity with trust IT systems
  • Teaching certificate

  • Current 1st level registration with the nursing and midwifery council

  • Safeguarding Children Level 3
