Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen to become part of the Adult Sleep Team at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). Our sleep service is rapidly expanding, and we are looking for a qualified Sleep Physiologist (Band 5) to join the team. As a service we accept referrals for sleep disorder breathing, parasomnias, circadian rhythm and movement disorders, and work closely with other specialist areas (such as NIV and neurology services), to offer a multidisciplinary team approach to our patients.

About us

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated 'Good' by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

All non-clinical roles may involve a mixture of on site and remote working, Specific details and flexible working options can be discussed as part of the interview process. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Applicants will hold a BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent with relevant clinical experience in respiratory or sleep physiology sciences. Newly qualified applicants or junior clinical physiologists enthusiastic about sleep medicine are welcomed and must be eligible for voluntary registration with the RCCP or equivalent.

Equally, we will consider applicants eligible for an apprenticeship in Clinical Physiology (Respiratory and Sleep), under the Annex 21, and on a fixed-term post covering the duration of their training, who will ultimately become a permanent Band 5 Sleep Physiologist (attached job description) upon completion of the apprenticeship. To be appointed as an apprentice, candidates must already hold GCES in Math and English, as well as, A-Levels (or equivalent).

This job role is a great opportunity to expand your clinical skills within sleep medicine by setting up and reporting sleep diagnostic tests, as well as, establishing and supporting patients on long-term CPAP therapy. Experience in PSG set up would be advantageous, but not essential. Although, experience in cardiorespiratory sleep scoring is desirable, further training can be provided if required.

The successful applicant will be expected to work one late shift (1 to 9pm) and an early shift (7.30am to 3.30pm), once a week. As the training progresses, there could be a possibility of working from home one day week. You will have the ability to work flexibly, be proactive and enjoy working as part of a team. A keen eye for detail and accuracy is also required. This post is based in Lymington New Forest Hospital, where on-site car parking is available and free for staff!
