This role is to provide strong leadership and up-to-date expertise in patient safety, quality improvement, compliance and risk management, to develop, embed and drive continuous improvement in the patient safety agenda. The post holder will report to the Chief Nurse and be able to demonstrate significant experience in managing patient safety, clinical effectiveness, risk and compliance.

The post holder will be an experienced, motivated individual with experience of managing patient safety at a senior level. The post holder will also act as the Trusts lead Patient Safety Specialist.

Main duties of the job

  • Having delegated authority for patient safety when the Chief Nurse is absent from the Trust.
  • Representing the Trust at local, regional and national meetings as required, ensuring that the Trust is represented operationally and strategically from a governance and patient safety and improvement perspective.
  • When appropriate, representing the Patient Safety at Executive Team, Trust Board and Subcommittee meetings, writing and presenting papers and ensuring that patient safety, quality, improvement, governance, and risk issues, both local and national, which may impact on the Trust are raised and addressed.
  • Responding to issues quickly and pro-actively, prioritising workload as appropriate.
  • Providing leadership for patient safety and improvement matters for the Trust, supporting the delivery of the Trust's Corporate Strategy.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training

Essential

  • Educated to Master's degree level or equivalent portfolio of evidence of experience at a senior level
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development that enhances quality governance theoretical and practical knowledge e.g. Diploma in Clinical Risk & Claims Management


Desirable

  • Professionally Registered clinician e.g. RGN, AHP etc
  • Formal Management Qualification or completion of Leadership Programme


Experience

Essential

  • Clinical background or extensive experience in Quality and Safety Governance role at a senior level
  • Considerable management competency at a senior level in healthcare governance or senior quality / risk / compliance /patient safety management role
  • Experience in preparing and leading an organisation in external standard assessment inspections, internal / external enforcement and compliance audits
  • Extensive knowledge of key portfolios areas including clinical risk management, medico legal services, patient safety and clinical audit


Desirable

  • Experience of working with Board members (Exec and Non-Exec), external reviewers such as CQC
