An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated and innovative individual to work as part of the Surgical Directorate in Wrexham Maelor Hospital as Specialty Manager, 37.5hrs per week.

The post holder will play a key role in both the management of designated surgical specialties and the operational day-to-daymanagement of all administration processes that support the patient's pathway.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Under the leadership of the Lead Manager the post holder will play a key role in both the management of designated specialties and the operational day to day management of all administration processes. The post holder will support achievement of all Annual Operating Framework targets.

Deputise for Lead Manager as required and manage appropriate medical staffing issues on behalf of the Director within designated specialties.

Participate on the Surgical Manager of the Day rota.

This is a developmental post and may include rotational placement, duties and development opportunities.

  • Provide strong, visible and effective leadership to all teams and individuals within delegated specialties. Develop and maintain good working relationships with consultants and other clinical staff
  • In conjunction with the Lead manager ensure that performance targets as outlined by Welsh Government are met with particular reference to the 26 week RTT and cancer targets, working across departments to ensure maximum efficiency

Person Specification



  • Comprehensive understanding of performance target as outlined in Annual Quality framework
  • Comprehensive understanding of performance targets
  • Knowledge of surgical services and challenges faced by division


  • Knowledge of information systems



  • Educated to degree/ diploma level or equivalent experience


  • Management or professional qualification



  • Experience of working with multi disciplinary teams and across divisions and departments
  • Awareness of external drivers for change
  • Experience of developing services and implementing change to meet performance targets
  • Experience of managing teams, undertaking recruitment, managing performance and sickness and disciplinary issues


  • Experience of benchmarking services and introducing change as a result
  • Experience of participating in consultant job plan reviews
