Bowel Cancer Specialist Screening Practitioner
Full Time Permanent Posts
The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is a world first amongst screening programmes and the first to offer screening to both men and women. The Lancashire Programme commenced in April 2008 and due to continued development and expansion of the service we are looking to appoint full time Specialist Screening Practitioners who will play a key role in supporting patients through the screening process.
The post will be based at the Stadium Blackpool although frequent and extensive daily motorway travel throughout the Lancashire region will be required.
The post will involve evening and weekend shifts.
You need to be able to use a range of IT Systems including the National Bowel Cancer Screening IT system (BCSS) for which training will be provided and be familiar with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook & Word.
You will need to commit to attend the Liverpool John Moores University Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner Course and be successful in completion of this Certificate of Professional Development.

Main duties of the job
- This role will include the delivery of nurse-led and virtual clinics,within the community throughout Lancashire andattendance at screening colonoscopy lists across Lancashire at three different Trusts and accredited sites.
- You will act as the individuals' advocate, supporting and empowering them and their family to make informed choices and decisions about their screening examination, care, treatment and future participation, through all stages of the screening programme.
- You will be involved in assessing individuals, making decisions based on the outcomes of your assessment and managing your own caseload.
- You will participateat colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT's) in the participating individuals' relevant Trust.
- You need to be able to work well within a team and also work autonomously as an individual.

- Working collaboratively with the Programme Hub.
- Delivery of nurse-led and virtual clinics within the community throughout Lancashire, assessing individuals, making decisions based on the outcomes of your assessment and managing your own caseload.

Clinical
- Provide advice, information and support for those making direct contact with the screening centre
- Be responsible for care delivery to patients identified by the screening programme and will meet the needs of patients arising as a result of

- Needing to be assessed as fit to undertake screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic investigations
- Needing to be able to make informed decisions prior undergoing screening, screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic interventions
- Having been identified as requiring further intervention, treatment, surveillance follow-up or discharge
- To use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills with patients and carers when breaking bad news and providing psychological support on diagnosis, treatment and symptom management
- Ensure timely access to screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic intervention and seamless transition to agreed pathways in primary, secondary, tertiary or out-patient care settings, during all stages of the screening pathway.
- To establish effective links with local colorectal cancer multi-disciplinary teams in order to ensure that when cancer is detected, there is timely presentation and transfer of patients to the multi-disciplinary team .
- Populate and maintain the BCSP National database.
- Participate in ongoing data collection and quality assurance, service feedback and audit with particular responsibility for the follow-up of patients .
- Perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate care according to BCSP.
- Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and organisations to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to referrals to local MDTs
Managerial/Leadership
- Support the provision of helpline services run from the Hub by resolving queries referred by them to the screening centre
- To ensure patient records for the screening services are completed to include data on treatment, staging and outcomes provided by the multi-disciplinary team.
- To maintain professional competence and support that of other staff within the BCSP .
- Support the Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner and Deputy Lead Screening Practitioner in the development of performance to the National Screening Programme, strategic groups and the wider health community.
- Contribute to the business and strategic planning for the BCSP .
- Provide specialist, expert knowledge to clinical colleagues, patients and carers/relatives.
- Evaluate service delivery, identify areas for improvement and initiate change.
- Travel between all clinic and endoscopy sites to ensure equity and timeliness of service delivery
Education & Development
- Participate in education and awareness sessions as identified by the BCSP.
- Attend Liverpool John Moores University within 12 months of in post and achieve certification in mandatory Bowel Cancer Specialist Screening Practitioner Course.
- Identify learning needs, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of education to meet identified need.
- Address specific health targets e.g. cancer waits related to own area of practice through education .
- Ensure own compliance with regards to mandatory training requirements.
Clinical Governance
- To ensure that clinical risks are identified, reported and managed within the department and adhere to local clinical governance policies.
- Identify need for, and undertake, research, clinical audit and bench marking in order to improve effectiveness of patient care.
- Disseminate research and audit findings through presentation to professional groups and publication.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to own area of work.
- Promote patient and public involvement activities in the BCSP, leading to service improvement.
