Main duties of the job

In support of the Deputy Director of Operational Finance / Associate Director of Finance to ensure the Division (s) make effective use of the available financial resources in pursuit of agreed Divisional and Corporate goals

To provide a comprehensive financial management and support service to the Division (s), providing a range of advice as a supporting member of the Senior Divisional Management Team and working closely with the Divisional Director of Operations (DDO)

To take lead responsibility for the Trust's annual financial planning process whilst adhering to corporate standards and timetables

To deputise for the Deputy Director of Operational Finance / Associate Director of Finance as appropriate

To be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Senior Management Accountant and the Management Accounts Assistant within the Divisional Team within Finance

Person Specification



  • CCAB / CIMA Qualified Accountant with significant post qualification experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development



  • Public Sector and/or NHS Experience
  • Experience of working in a large organisation
  • Current, significant experience of strategic and corporate level financial management
  • Experience of leading / managing staff



  • Proven influencing and negotiating skills at organisational and personal levels
  • Ability to influence colleagues at all levels whilst ensuring that relationships remain positive and that goals are achieved
  • Ability to set ambitious targets with the aim of delivering added value to the service
  • Hold expert knowledge and skills in financial management
  • Ability to operate effectively in an environment where there is uncertainty and ambiguity
  • Expert knowledge of financial and accounting procedures, financial and other legislation
  • Understanding of the complex financial regime within Foundation Trusts
  • Sound understanding of the NHS Strategic agenda
  • Evidence based knowledge regarding financial management in the NHS and NHS finance policies, including costing and contracting
  • Thorough understanding of financial governance and audit requirements
  • Understanding of service re-design and improvement methodologies


  • Experience as a senior accountant within the NHS
