An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 6 Registered Nurse to join our small, highly trained clinical team at the North Middlesex University Hospital gynaecology outpatient's department. We offer gynaecology outpatient services including Colposcopy, hysteroscopy, specialist, and routine gynaecology clinics. As a Band 6 staff nurse within the team, you will be required to support the Lead Nurses, medical team, and other colleagues to deliver a high-quality service to meet the needs of women undergoing Colposcopy, hysteroscopy, and gynaecological procedures. The post holder will be a clinically based practitioner who will take a supportive role in strengthening the nursing contribution to patients and service users within the centralised out-patient services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to have some specialist knowledge and experience in Gynaecology, Hysteroscopy and Colposcopy. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in expanding their knowledge and understanding within gynaecology. They will be supported by a team of

clinicians, nurses, and healthcare assistants to help ensure that patients receive the highest quality care possible.

The post holder will act as a role model for junior team members in the delivery of a

consistent high standard of nursing practice. They will deputise for the Clinical Nurse Specialists and will support the leadership and management of the department with. emphasis on quality and clinical standards. They will have continuing clinical responsibility for managing the department in the absence of the CNS's which will include understanding finances, the deployment, delegation and supervision of all grades of staff and be visible and approachable for patients, staff and visitors.

They need to be responsible for setting standards of care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for women requiring Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy and other minor gynaecological procedures and ensuring high standards are met and maintained in accordance with NICE guidelines, hospital policies, hysteroscopy, and colposcopy protocols as well as Cervical Screening England.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards and professional practice as set by the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour and relevant professional guidelines,

To support the Hysteroscopy CNS and the Colposcopy CNS in running the departments and ensuring clinics run efficiently and effectively.

To regularly take charge of the practice setting and take responsibility for ensuring the coordination and direct provision of high standard of holistic, patient centred care by assessing nursing care and health education needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for each patient.

To be designated to act as a deputy to the person holding continuing responsibility for the organisation and management of the practice setting.

To work autonomously and in association with, and in support of other colleagues and members of the multi-disciplinary team and with other agencies where appropriate.

The post holder will demonstrate a positive attitude in working towards achieving and providing a quality service within the philosophy of the gynaecology services and in hysteroscopy and colposcopy clinics.

Act as a mentor for less experienced nurses and other staff.

Manage all equipment for Hysteroscopy and Colposcopy. Ensuring equipment is sent off and returned from sterilisation on time and manage clinic stock, making orders and auditing equipment and stock as required.

Ensure daily and monthly clinic audits are maintained accurately e.g., monitoring room temperatures, checking for expiry dates etc.

Maintain accurate and efficient record keeping.

Ensure all histopathology and cytology samples are sent off in the appropriate manner and that all their documentation is filed and processed as per department protocols.

Service Management

Participate in regular professional meetings.

Participate in the development and review of departmental policies, procedures, standards.

and practices in accordance with Health Board policies and Cervical Screening England.

To ensure all accidents/incidents and complaints are reported and to assist in the

investigation of them.

Managing the practice setting

In the absence of the CNSs manage the department and coordinate nurse staffing rotas and demonstrate effective use of resources. Comply with Trust standing financial instructions and understand trends and expenditure, taking steps to support the local pay controls in place for all resources.

Ensure the department has adequate resources / equipment to provide an effective service. Ensure equipment is safe and in working order by ensuring where required proactive and reactive maintenance contracts are in place i.e.: medical devices aligned to Medical Engineering Department.

Support workforce planning and staff deployment by interpreting and monitoring trends, and through efficient staff rostering. Plan and maintain appropriate staffing levels and skill mix in line with the agreed funded establishment, considering role and competence of staff when planning and delegating work. Understand and mitigate any workforce risks associated.

Ensure registered health care professionals uphold and maintain professional standards of practice and behaviour and dress according to the Trust dress code.

Participate in the recruitment of staff. Engage in attendance and performance management of staff ensuring any concerns are identified, reported, actioned in accordance with the relevant Trust policy and procedure.

Be aware of and take appropriate action in regard of deteriorating patient condition, clinical emergencies, cardiac arrest, fire and major or internal incidents which affect business continuity.

Assist the Lead Nurse in developing a culture where openness and a positive approach to learning, change management and continuous professional development are attained.

Be up to date with all mandatory training.

Ensure annual appraisal is done on time and participate in assisting junior members of staff in maintaining appraisals.

Counselling anxious patients about colposcopy and hysteroscopy

May deal with blood and body fluids.

To take part in the smear taker training education programme and keep up to date with

Cervical Screening England guidelines.
