The post holder will be skilled and competent to participate in a full range of Interventional Radiology procedures assisting Radiologists and Radiographers during these procedures. They will be responsible for the coordination of all interventional procedures for all Imaging modalities. They will provide specialist nursing care and support to all patients and users of the Radiology service, ensuring their dignity and privacy are not compromised at any time.

The post holder will participate in care for patients pre and post procedure, monitoring, observing, and communicating with the patient throughout the procedure. The post holder will take responsibility for the supervision and guidance of other staff including health care assistants and students. They will become competent to administer conscious sedation and care for sedated patients. They will consolidate and maintain their ownleadership and organisational skills to facilitate the smooth running of thedepartment. They will also abide by Trust values and adhere to all policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

Undertake all training necessary to develop skills to provide a high standard ofInterventional radiology Nursing care that meets the patient's needs, withinthe agreed policies of the Imaging Department and Trust.

To use their previous nursing knowledge and skills for the clinical observation and recording of data relating to patients across all areas serviced by the Imaging Radiology Team, ensuring that accurate records of patient care and progress are maintained and reviewed.Make appropriate and safe decisions relating to patient needs andcommunicate this effectively to other members of the multi-disciplinary team caring for the patient.

Respect patients' dignity, wishes and beliefs, involving them in decisionmaking and obtaining their consent either verbally or written for everyintervention.Initiate and participate in departmental developments and take a proactiverole in the implementation of procedures and policies to improve patient care.To be competent in the administration of I.V and oral drugs used in interventional radiology and to undertake relevant drug administration training to comply with national and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust guidelines.Maintain and protect the safety and confidentiality of patients and families.To work flexibly in accordance with the changing needs of the service.

Job responsibilities

To check CRIS Radiology System for any upcoming procedures.To check Fusion for blood results and order any blood tests pertinent to theexamination required.Prepare interventional trolleys for the daily procedures.Daily and weekly check and re stock of crash trolleys.Weekly check of Emergency drug Boxes.

Daily QA check of blood sugar monitoring equipment.Stock rotation and management.Safe and competent I.V cannulation of patients.Correct use of aseptic techniques.Clinical observation and recording of data relating to patients both pre andpost procedures.Accurate completion of records including blood and microbiology forms and correct labelling of samples with subsequent delivery to Path Lab.Escorting safely and handing over patient back to ward post procedure.To supervise the activities of students and trainees within the department to ensure that they observe health and safety rules and fire regulationsDevelop and promote good working relationships between multidisciplinary teams.Maintain a safe working environment for both staff and patients and recognise the need for evaluating, reporting on, and acting on risk within the department.Report all clinical and non-clinical incidents and near misses in the department according to Trust policy, to ensure timely investigation.Work within, and contribute to, evidence-based protocols and guidelines.To ensure a high standard of cleanliness is maintained within the department and to adhere to infection control policies.Any other duties commensurate with grade and experience as required.

  • Current 1 level NMC Registration

Essential and Desirable


  • 2 years experience
  • NMC Registration


  • Previous scrub experience or willing to learn.
  • Experience of managing a small team



  • Willingness to undertake post graduate study
