In 2017, the Government published its Green Paper for Transforming children and young peoples mental health, which detailed proposals for expanding access to mental health care for children and young people, building on the national NHS transformation programme which was already underway.

The proposals were focused on providing additional support through schools and colleges and reducing waiting times for treatment. Following a 13-week public consultation, during which the Government received more than 2,700 responses, the Department of Health and Social Care and the Department for Education published its Response to the Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Green Paper Consultation.

These core commitments are delivered through a joint and collaborative programme led by the Department of Health and Social Care, Department for Education and NHS England, with support from Health Education England and Public Health England and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities.

MHSTs have three core functions:
  • to deliver evidence-based interventions for mild-to-moderate mental health issues
  • support the senior mental health lead(where established) in each school or college to introduce or develop whole school or college approach and
  • give timely advice to school and college staff, and liaise with external specialist service to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting time of growth and change within the Plymouth Livewell Mental Health support Teams (MHST ) we are currently working collaboratively with children and young people, and our partners, to deliver the Governments Programme for mental health support to be available in schools.

To support the development of our established Mental Help Support Teams, we are looking to recruit a Senior Education Mental Health Practitioner or someone willing to do additional training to be able to carry out this role.

In line with the Government's priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the new Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors in England.

On a day to day basis, you will be overseeing the workload of EMHPs, conducting both Case Management and Clinical Skills supervision, as well as holding a small caseload of patients yourself.

Typical tasks within this, might include reviewing suitability for treatment within the MHST, gathering information and facilitating onward referrals, and liaising with schools as part of the wider MHST.

This role may not be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route, please refer to the Direct Gov website for more information with regards to eligibility.
