An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Safeguarding Children Advisor at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

We are currently seeking a Safeguarding Children advisor to join our team at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, that is a highly motivated and experienced practitioner who is capable of positively influencing practice and is competent to lead practitioners in the provision of appropriate safeguarding input for those receiving care from BHNFT with the support of the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children.

Main duties of the job

BHNFT has an all age Safeguarding Team that performs corporate functions to ensure that BHNFT meets it statutory and contractual obligations in terms of safeguarding. This work includes

Ensuring that all staff have the required knowledge, skills and competence to support them in identifying and responding to any safeguarding concerns ensuring action has been taken to keep people safe.

Ensuring staff have access to advice, support and supervision appropriate to their need and role

Ensuring that suitable policies, procedures and guidance are in place to underpin safe practice

To work in partnership across Barnsley and surrounding areas to promote safeguarding agendas and partnership working

  • Must hold one of the following qualifications of Registered adult/childrens nurse or Registered Midwife orHealth Visitor or School Nurse
  • Training/teaching qualification
  • Safeguarding Children Training level 3


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Undertaken additional safeguarding children training
  • Undertaken supervision training equivalent to the NSPCC safeguarding supervision skills course.



  • Significant experience of working within a safeguarding environment or within a role that requires significant involvement in safeguarding processes.
  • Significant experience of working at B6 or above.
  • Experience of devising/delivering training/ presenting.
  • Experience of multi-agency working.
  • Experience in undertaking audits.


  • Experience of working in a safeguarding team and supporting its functions.
  • Experience of delivering training and safeguarding supervision or as a general clinical supervisor.
  • Experience of developing or contributing to policy, procedure or guidance.
  • Experience of managing investigations, including root cause analysis.
  • Evidence of facilitating and supporting change in practice.

Knowledge and Awareness


  • Principles underpinning effective Safeguarding children practice.
  • A good level of knowledge of the national and local safeguarding agenda including relevant policy, procedures, practice legislation and developments.
  • Knowledge of current research findings and evidenced based practice.
  • Can demonstrate continuous personal and professional development.

  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • IT skills i.e. be able to use excel, power-point, outlook and word.
  • Ability to challenge respectfully and escalate concerns.
  • Experience in conducting difficult conversations of a complex nature with service users, resulting in positive outcomes.
