Sheffield Health and Social Care are excited to introduce this brand new role to support new preceptee nurses in our inpatient services to develop, learn and grow into confident registered nurses.

The practice nurse educator (PNE) is a supernumerary role that will work into our wards alongside preceptee nurses with the sole intention of supporting achievement of key requirements of preceptorship and supporting preceptees and preceptors to evidence skills and knowledge and practice.

Main duties of the job

You will need to be a skilled nurse practitioner who will work shift hours (But not be in the numbers) over 5 days a week. This will include some weekend days each month. You need to be able to get to all trust sites and you will need to be able to work into a range of teams. You will be able to build relationships with colleagues across teams and particularly relate to the Senior Nurse Practitioners and Ward Managers on the wards.

This post will sit in the Nursing Leadership Directorate and be line managed through our Preceptorship leadership team with input from Heads of Nursing.

Key skills and knowledge areas will be

- Record keeping requirements

- Mental health act and mental capacity act responsibilities

- Medicines management

- Taking charge of a shift, prioritisation, escalation and delegation

- Principles of MDT working

  • Role-model the standards and behaviours of an effective leader and those of Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Ensure the requirements of the organisations statutory responsibilities in relation to codes of conduct, corporate and clinical governance are disseminated, acted upon and achieved.
  • Compliance with the organisations Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain own competence and training requirements required for the role.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and evaluation of the post

Person Specification



  • oCurrent NMC Registration / Registered Mental Health Nurse
  • oEvidence of formal ongoing professional development
  • oProfessional Nurse Advocate or willingness to achieve qualification.
  • oClinical educator/supervisor qualification or willingness to work towards



  • Relevant recent experience in mental health inpatient wards.
  • Working knowledge of NMC Standards
  • Understands professional standards for medicines management
  • Understands professional and legal requirements of the mental health act, mental capacity act and human rights act



  • oExpert clinical role model who is committed to improvement of standards and patient care.
  • oEffective communication skills to meet the needs of the post in full
  • oExperience within a range of clinical settings
