An exciting opportunity has arisen within Surgical Services for a Matron in General Surgery/ Colorectal Surgery

Part of general surgery directorate, located at NGH with responsibility for Firth 4 General and Colorectal Surgery, and Associated Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Main duties of the job

This is a highly complex role and requires passion and drive working within the framework of the Matron principles, your key role will be to ensure clinical quality standards are achieved by providing inspirational and visible clinical leadership to the nursing teams working within the sphere of the Directorates vision and values.

The role is based within the acute hospital setting but as patient pathways and services develop, links to the community may emerge.

The role of Matron is intrinsic to the success of the patient pathway in influencing and working with the multidisciplinary and management teams and leading the highly skilled Nursing workforce to provide a quality service intrinsic to a positive patient experience.

Person Specification



  • Registered Nurse
  • Relevant clinical knowledge
  • To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998.
  • Evidence of relevant post registration academic achievement at Master's degree level or equivalent.
  • Commitment to further professional development
  • Leadership development /Proven leadership skills



  • Experience at Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Proven change management skills

Special Skills / Aptitudes


  • Possess strong leadership ability
  • Able to work collaboratively and across professional boundaries
  • Ability to manage change
