Are you an experienced and dynamic clinical research nurse who can confidently lead our research team and manage our growing portfolio of Oncology Clinical Research? Then this role might be for you!

Applicants must be a registered adult nurse with evidence of continuing professional development. You should have good experience in working within the NHS, a strong clinical background and a desire and willingness to learn & develop others. Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability and initiative to work independently and manage a patient caseload across a variety of research studies.

Main duties of the job

  • Work within EU clinical trial directives in accordance with ICH GCP (International Conference on Harmonisation and Good Clinical Practice) ensuring that the clinical trial protocol is adhered to at all times.
  • Identify patients suitable for entry into clinical trials by attending clinics (screening notes/consultant referral) and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings.
  • Participate in the informed consent process acting as a resource and support to patients and their families
  • Co-ordinate the research patient pathway from screening through to trial closure
  • Ensures that adequate precautions are taken to minimise the risk of cross-infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids including blood products.
  • Advise the local nursing team who administer trial drugs, be aware of and report any side effects as outlined in the protocol.
  • Maintain adequate patients' records and ensure all relevant information is documented in the patient's medical and nursing notes.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of Clinical Report Forms (CRFs).
  • Responsible for the collection, co-ordination and computerisation of data generated from the clinical trials.
  • Keep up to date with current practices for cannulation, phlebotomy, care of patients with Central Venous Access lines and handling and administration for cytotoxic chemotherapy.
  • Act as a role model for excellence in oncology based research.


About us

As part of Kings Health Partners, the Oncology and Haematology Clinical Trials (OHCT) team is made up of ninety plus staff members consisting of Research Nurses, Clinical Trial Practitioners, Clinical Trial Coordinators and the Safety & Support Team at Guys' and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

We work closely with the oncology and haematology medical teams to recruit patients to our trials and to ensure patients are monitored closely throughout. We have a large portfolio of Phase II and III trials which are split into teams for specific tumour groups. We also have a team dedicated to early phase trials and run weekly early phase clinics in the Clinical Research Facility. We attract commercial and non-commercial trials, ranging from interventional drug or radiotherapy trials to observational studies.

  • NMC Registration with previous acute NHS experience
  • Educated to degree level or above

  • Substantial experience in oncology/ /haemato-oncology or clinical trial setting
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships
  • Experience of mentoring and developing colleagues

  • Experience in service development and improvement
  • Managerial/team leader experience


Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
