Working as part of the Blood Sciences leadership team, comprising of Associate Clinical Director for Blood Sciences, Blood Sciences Service Manager, Haematology Technical Specialist Manager, as the Chemistry Technical Specialist Manager you will be responsible for all aspects of the Chemistry, Immunology and Point of care testing, analytical services across The Royal Derby Hospital (RDH), Queens Hospital, Burton (QHB) and Chesterfield Royal hospital (CRH).

Derbyshire Pathology is a contractual joint venture to provide pathology services to the Royal Derby Hospital, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Queens Hospital, Burton. The service is hosted by University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHSFT but provides services from laboratories at all three hospitals.

These are exciting times for Derbyshire Pathology which was formed in July 2018. We are part of the ME2 Pathology network, have recently installed a new LIMS (Clinisys WPE) and are about to embark on a major tendering exercise for new equipment as part of the ME2 network. This post will give the successful candidate a great opportunity to develop and use managerial, leadership and technical skills as we continue to develop our new network.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will require HCPC registration, Fellowship of the IBMS and a management/ leadership qualification or equivalent experience. You will be able to demonstrate strong managerial and leadership experience with Advanced knowledge of technical and scientific techniques.

One of the key elements of this role will be the harmonisation of technical and scientific processes across Derbyshire Pathology, ensuring an efficient, high quality diagnostic service. It is envisaged that this post will have a base site at RDH but will have cross site responsibilities and there is an expectation that the successful candidate will spend some time at all 3 sites.

Person Specification



  • HCPC registration
  • Management/ leadership qualification or equivalent experience
  • FIBMS/ Chartered Scientist/ MSc or equivalent



  • Advanced knowledge of technical & scientific techniques
  • In depth understanding of requirements of ISO15189:2022 accreditation



  • Significant experience of working in a senior supervisory role in Pathology


  • Experience working with Pathology IT systems
  • Experience working with a quality management system
