This post will be based at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH) to support the Clinical and Nursing Lead for Gastroenterology in meeting the standards required by the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:
  • Manage, direct, and evaluate the nursing care for a defined caseload of patients in all areas of Endoscopy i.e. pre-assessment, admission, procedure rooms, recovery and discharge.
  • Contribute significantly toward the continuing development of professional nursing practice within the Endoscopy Unit.
  • Maintain and continually develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice relevant to individual clinical area.
  • Encourage the patients' family and friends to be actively involved in the caring process.
  • Act as a mentor and role model to others, reflecting the beliefs about professional nursing practice and patient care outlined in the Endoscopy department philosophy.
  • Communicate information effectively to patients / carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Deliver a patient centered style of practice that reflects and promotes the beliefs and values of professional nursing practice and patient care outlined in the Endoscopy departments philosophy.
  • Set and maintain standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with team leaders and departmental manager.
  • Accurately document and report to other members of the nursing team and multi-disciplinary team information regarding the care given to patients, communicating changes as they occur.
  • Liaise with other health care professionals with ongoing responsibility for patient care.
  • Supervise, mentor, support and educate junior nurses in the clinical practice setting.
  • Always adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.
  • Adhering to BSG, JAG and GRS guidelines and practice accordingly.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to research-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active part in the introduction of research-based change to improve patient centered care.
  • Demonstrate a problem-solving approach when assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care using a holistic model of care, considering the complex and multiple needs of patients with specialist conditions.
  • Demonstrate awareness and comprehensive understanding of accountability/responsibility and duty of care. Support and educate junior staff of the implications for practice.
  • Take responsibility for safe patient discharge, providing clear and accurate information about endoscopic findings and offering health education and advice.
  • Adhere to trust and department infection control policies and guidelines relating to exposure to blood and body fluids and support, supervise and monitor the practice of junior staff.
  • Demonstrate understanding of COSHH regulations and the importance of using personal protective equipment when dealing with contaminated equipment and chemicals and ensure understanding and compliance by junior staff.
  • Demonstrate dexterity, skill, and concentration in assisting medical staff with all types of endoscopic procedures, including emergencies and specialist therapeutic procedures.
  • Ensure accurate specimen labeling and traceability, resolving discrepancies as required.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and adherence to moving and handling policies and guidance relating to patients and equipment. Demonstrate understanding of specific manual handling requirements of the department. Provide training, support, and supervision to junior staff.
  • Comply with radiation regulations when working in the x-ray department by wearing appropriate protection and monitoring equipment.
  • Demonstrate specialist skills in the handling, cleaning, decontamination, tracking and maintenance of endoscopic equipment adhering to local policies and national guidelines. Provide support and monitor practice of junior staff.
  • Demonstrate competence in assisting medical staff with all types of endoscopic procedures. Provide support and training to junior staff in developing their skills.
  • Act as a resource to patients and other clinical areas, providing clear information and education.


Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to degree level or demonstrate equivalent experience.
  • Able to Demonstrate clinical skills.
  • Experience at Band 5 level

  • Experience of working within an endoscopy department and able to do pre-assessment for GA/ deep sedation & non-GA/ deep sedation patients, admission, Endoscopic procedures Basic and advance endoscopic procedures, recovery and discharge.
  • Understand Health and Safety at Work Act and local rules and know their responsibilities to others.
  • Punctuality and reliability in attending to duties.
  • Understand the Data Protection and Equalities Act and their implications.
  • Flexible and methodical in the workplace.

  • Evidence of implementing research or audit into practice.


Desirable

  • Post basic nursing qualification in a related nursing specialty.
  • Competence in cannulation and venipuncture.
  • Experience of assisting during procedures such as Gastroscopy / colonoscopy / Trans nasal Endoscopy/ Endoscopic Ultrasound and EBUS/ bronchoscopy.
  • Knowledge of resource management.
  • Knowledge of waiting lists and JAG / BSG guidelines.
  • Experience of supporting nurses, junior doctors, patients and carers using appropriate language and terminology.
  • Experience of teaching colleagues and patients using appropriate terminology.
  • Teaching qualification or evidence of ability to teach
