To ensure that the Trust fulfils its statutory duties to safeguard and protect children and young people as set out in Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023), the revised accompanying statutory guidance, this role will ensure that NWAngliaFT is compliant with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards and discharges its statutory/legislative obligations and responsibilities with the Head of Safeguarding (HOS).

This role is the named children's safeguarding nurse as outlined in the intercollegiate document and compliant with the national standards for NHS trusts.

Main duties of the job

Leading and influencing the development of a robust culture of safeguarding practice across NWAngliaFT and working collaboratively with all services to promote safeguarding. The role focuses on the operational delivery of the Safeguarding People service using enhanced skills and competencies to influence the pathways of care in the safeguarding of vulnerable children, people and families.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications


  • Registered Professional, e.g. Children registered nurse (NMC)
  • Working towards Master's Degree in an appropriate health related subject or equivalent or working towards
  • Evidence of continuing professional development


  • Post registration qualification in safeguarding (expected to completed pathway within 2 years in post)



  • Experience of leading safeguarding at a senior level eg, Named Professional
  • Expert knowledge of national safeguarding policy and legislation, including the Children Acts and the Care Act, MCA, DOL's, LD& A
  • Evidence demonstrating leadership, education and service development achievements
  • Evidence of the proactive involvement in the supervision and development of members of the multi-disciplinary team demonstrating strong coaching and mentoring skills
  • Some evidence of leading the development of programmes of care, protocols, audit and research.
  • Evidence of leadership in teaching and mentoring learners and training need analysis.
  • Experience of staff management & leadership


  • A resource in advising external agencies/organisations.
  • Is able to make strategic and operational judgements involving complex facts/Situations in relation to safeguarding concerns.



  • Excellent organisational, communication skills
  • Highly organised with the ability to prioritise work for self and teams working flexibly across a range of professional issues
