We are seeking to appoint a conscientious experienced Biomedical Scientist who has considerable operational experience of managing a Quality Management system and working closely with staff at all levels to help embed a quality ethos.

The Pathology Quality Manager is an integral part of the overall Pathology Laboratory Management Team. They will be responsible for the implementation, development and co-ordination of the quality management system for the disciplines of Laboratory Medicine and Cellular Pathology across the Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) network of laboratory sites (Morriston Hospital, Singleton Hospital, Neath Port Talbot Hospital and Princess of Wales Hospital). Note within SBUHB, Microbiology services are delivered via an SLA with Public Health Wales, therefore the scope of this Pathology Quality Manager post only covers Laboratory Medicine and Cellular Pathology.

The department is actively working in partnership with Hywel Dda University Health Board (HDUHB), Public Health Wales and Swansea University under the umbrella of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH) to develop a Regional Pathology Service in the form of a network of pathology laboratories across Mid and South West Wales. The post holder will actively participate in the development of regional working with Hywel Dda University Health Board (HDUHB).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an enthusiastic, well-motivated individual with excellent attention to detail. They will have excellent communication & interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to work with staff at all levels both internal and external to the organisation. You will be able to work as part of a team and understand how vital maintaining good staff/ customer relationships and providing high levels of service are in a pathology laboratory environment.

You will have experience of operating a Quality Management System including undertaking audits and document control processes. Having had a significant role in the lead up to, and during, an accreditation inspection against international standards will be an advantage.

Through the processes they control and develop, the Quality Manager will be expected to provide the reassurances required ensuring that clinical governance within Pathology is controlled and compliant.

The hours are full time, notionally between 08:30 and 17:00 Monday to Friday, although some flexibility may be required. As a service we are willing to consider either a permanent position or a fixed term 12 month secondment.

The post holder will be a key member of the Pathology Team and will ensure compliance with the standards set out within the UKAS ISO 15189:2022 Standard 5.4.2 and will have delegated responsibility and authority ensuring that processes needed for the quality management system are established, implemented, and maintained.

The post holder will ensure Pathology becomes progressively more effective in quality terms and meets all regulatory requirements including the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations and compliance with the Human Tissue Act.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification



  • BSc in Biomedical Science
  • MSc in Biomedical Science(or related subject) or equivalent
  • Relevant professional qualification (e.g. MIBMS or CSci)
  • Knowledge and experience of Quality Management Systems, Quality Management & Change Management
