We are looking for enthusiastic team players to join our busy theatre team.

Are you excited about starting a new career in theatre and developing your role? We are recruiting registered theatre practitioners (ODPs or Registered Nurses) to work within our operating theatres at Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.

We have vacancies in Anaesthetics and scrub, in a range of specialties including Orthopaedics, ENT, Max fax and general surgery. This is an extremely exciting time to join the department due to the addition of a new purpose built Surgical Centre, planned for 2024. With state of the art facilities at our finger tips we aim to take our team to next level, and you with it!

Please note before application that you MUST be:
  • An experienced theatre RGN with an Anaesthetic Assistant qualification or Scrub experience.
  • A qualified/qualifying Operating Department Practitioner.

You must be an ODP with recent anaesthetic or scrub experience. RGN with recent anaesthetic experience and an anaesthetic qualification or scrub experience.

If your application does not mention your experience and or qualification, it will likely be rejected at short listing.

Newly qualified and about to qualify ODPs will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • Works as part of the clinical team providing direct patient care, primarily as an assistant to the anaesthetist.
  • Plans, implements, delivers and evaluates care given by self and other team members to patients and their relatives.
  • Assist in emergency situations and initiate emergency procedures in line with policy.
  • Act as the patients' advocate.
  • Liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Be clinically competent in all areas of practice relevant to the post.
  • Take direct responsibility for ensuring cleaning standards are maintained throughout the shift.
  • Ensure that Privacy and Dignity of patients is maintained at all times.
  • Collect patients from the wards and escort to theatre.
  • May take on extended roles such as cell salvage, following completion of required training and competency assessment.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records.
  • Works flexibly across the theatres as required.
  • Ensure that all quality initiatives within the nursing environment are adhered to and that the highest standards of care are maintained at all times.
  • Communicate with patients, relatives and carers sensitive clinical information in an appropriate way.
  • Supervises junior colleagues.
  • Delivers training for one to one induction and ongoing training for new and temporary staff, mentorship for students and preceptorship for newly qualified staff.
  • The post holder will be required to manage conflicting priorities and may be required to switch tasks with little notice.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experiance


  • Previous Theatre Experience
  • Knowledge of relevant surgical procedures, and experience of working within the speciality
  • Experience of caring for the critically ill patient

Skills and Abilities


  • Internal rotation, on call shifts and weekend working


  • Ability to assess complex clinical situations and act appropriately
  • Able to undertake the higher level clinical skills required for the specialist area
  • Knowledge of relevant NHS legislation to include clinical governance/COSHH/Health and Safety/Infection Control/Clinical Waste/Manual Handling/PEAT/Confidentiality and the Data Protection Act/ Patient and Public Involvement agenda
  • Up to date knowledge of current evidence based practice in nursing / theatre practice



  • Diploma or equivalent knowledge and working towards or willing to work towards degree level
  • Post Reg anaesthetic qualification (if RGN)


  • Teaching / Mentorship Qualification
  • Theatre qualification
