Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to offer a suitable applicant an exciting opportunity to develop their career by undertaking the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) Health Visitor training. This is offered as a fixed term contract for the duration of the course starting in September 2024.

The SCPHN course is fully funded and run as a joint programme between the 0-19 Torbay service and the University of the West of England (UWE), delivery is at Masters level. Your personal statement in the application should reflect your ability to articulate ideas to an academic standard referencing key statements and literature reviewed using a referencing system to demonstrate academic ability and your knowledge and desire to undertake the SCPHN Health Visitor qualification.

Applicants must be Registered Nurses with an interest in addressing the health needs of children, young people and their families. SCPHN training is a significant investment both from the successful applicant and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and your passion and inspiration for public health nursing should be reflected within your application.

The course commences in September 2024 for 12 months on a full-time basis, 50% academic where travel to UWE's Glenside campus in Bristol will be necessary and 50% practical. Annual leave dates are set by the university. Salary is fixed during the training at mid-point Band 5.

Main duties of the job

  • To work towards gaining the standards of proficiency for entry to the Nursing and Midwifery Council register for Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.
  • To value differences and individuality, showing respect to all when working with children, young people and their families and carers.
  • To work in partnership with children, young people and their families and carers to identify health needs in order to negotiate appropriate intervention from the health visiting or school nursing service and other relevant agencies.
  • To offer support and advice to children, young people, families and carers through home visits and other interventions, in a variety of settings, including one-to-one, schools and groups.


About us

The Torbay 0 to 19 Partnership is a collaboration between health visiting, school nursing, Action for Children and The Children's Society. The Student SCPHN will work alongside an academic supervisor and assessor who will offer support and learning outcomes for practice. Students will be based with their supervisor within a 0-19 Team in Torbay.

During this time skills will be developed to enable the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme in a variety of community settings, including the family home environment, children's centres, schools and nurseries, whilst working as part of a skill mix team. The student SCPHN post is fixed term during the duration of the course, travel to the University of the West of England (Glenside campus), is to be expected.

  • To complete work based skills assessments agreed in partnership with the University and the Trust
  • To adhere to learning contracts agreed with Practice Assessor, taking responsibility for adult learning
  • To work effectively as a team member and independently, both at University and in clinical practice
  • To attend all formal education and informal work based learning sessions as directed by the University, submitting all assignments as required.
  • To establish a working relationship with a Practice Assessor and Supervisor throughout the course.
  • To agree a programme of learning and negotiate learning objectives with Practice Assessor to enable the embedding of theoretical learning in practice.
  • To work within the agreed programme to achieve the Nursing and Midwifery Councils proficiency standards identified in the practice portfolio.
