Main duties of the job

  • This post will form part of the core adult clinical service, being integrated into the adult cardiac team where you will assist with the day-to-day service.
  • Taking detailed medication histories, prioritising and actioning medication orders from ward staff, and providing medication counselling at discharge.
  • To provide support and input to the clinical pharmacy team, including to the continuing development of the pharmacy service. There is an opportunity to gain experience in performing appraisals and supporting junior staff.
  • To manage time and resources, prioritise daily tasks depending on workload, staffing and the needs of the service to ensure that pharmacy services are provided in a timely and appropriate manner at all levels within the hospital.
  • To obtain and verify patient's drug histories in order to ensure the accurate continuation of patient's medication from Primary to Secondary care.
  • To assist the clinical pharmacists, medical and nursing staff in identifying, prioritising and resolving patient's medication related problems.
  • To minimise risk to patients, the public and other healthcare professionals by giving appropriate advice on drug handling, administration and disposal.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training


  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Accredited Medicines Optimisation Technician (Essential within 12 months of appointment and for progression from Band 4 to Band 5)
  • Accredited Checking Technician (Essential within 12 months of appointment and for progression from Band 4 to Band 5)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development


  • Additional qualifications such as coaching, leadership, prioritisation skills

Knowledge and Experience


  • Proven ability to dispense medicines accurately without errors
  • Experience of delivering dispensing services as a technician


  • Experience of delivering dispensing services as a technician within a hospital
  • Experience of medicines supply within the NHS
  • Experience of supporting the training and teaching of others
  • Previous participation in audit or quality improvement work
  • Previous experience of working within a clinical patient-facing environment

  • Good oral and written communication skills
