We are looking for a enthusiastic and motivated individual to be part of the Pre Operative Assessment service in Bronglais General Hospital. As a band 6, you will be a senior member of the team, coordinating the department and line managing junior staff.

The pre assessment nurse is independently responsible for arranging and providing a comprehensive , effective , efficient assessment process for patients referred for inpatient, day case or specialist surgery . The nurse is responsible for maintaining accurate associated records at all times.

As a pre assessment nurse you will need to independently obtain a comprehensive medical and nursing history, instigate relevant investigations and perform a physical examinations as appropriate. It is essential that you have excellent communication skills in order to provide pre operative information and health education.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role involve the day to day running of the clinics, liaising with other department, stakeholders and multi disciplinary services.

Line manging staff, active involvement with appraisals, sickness reviews, staff rotas and general enquiries.

Autonomously manage a caseload of patients. This may include patients who have complicated health care needs/anaesthetic complications and complex social issues within the pre assessment unit.

Collect data for Audits and Benchmarking. E.g. monitoring uncontrolled chronic health problems / Patient activity / screening of patients.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • RGN Level 1
  • Diploma/Degree
  • Relevant Post graduate diploma level qualifications
  • Specific clinical training / education related to pre-oprative care such as Pre-operative assesment course Anaesthetic and recovery certificate / diploma
  • Physical assessment and history taking
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Experience and knowledge in clinical examination skills and patient history taking.
  • Assessing Anaesthetic risks
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of continual professional development.


Desirable

  • Post graduate degree.
  • Enrolled on masters pathway


Experience

Essential

  • Background in surgical nursing in surgical / medical / critical are / Anaesthetic or recovery nursing or extensive knowledge in pre-admission
  • Experience in taking an accurate and comprehensive medical and nursing history.
  • Evidence of informal / formal teaching.

  • Teaching qualification
