We are seeking to recruit a nurse with excellent communication skills, eager to take on new challenges and willing to adapt to changing working environments in a busy emergency and out-patient setting . The post holder will need to demonstrate their skills in holistic assessment of ophthalmic patients, and ensure the smooth running of the out-patient clinics within the vitreo retinal service .

We are a busy fast paced environment seeing up to 10,000 outpatients yearly, and approx. 800 patients within our emergency vitreo retinal unit . Hence you will need to be flexible, fast learning , motivated and an excellent all round communicator to suit this role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the vitreo retinal out-patient clinics , providing holistic nursing assessment and care for patients .

He/she will need to ensure the co-ordination of the clinic, identifying issues and acting to resolve within his/her professional remit . The post will require you to provide pre-op assessment for a defined group of patients within the service and will be key to developing this pathway for the future .

The post holder will be required to work across both the emergency vitreo retinal service and out-patient clinics and as such will need to be adaptable and confident in working within pressurised environments .

This role includes the education , emergency treatment and improving the patients pathways of patients undergoing emergency retinal detachment , raised eye pressures and complex diabetic patients across the service .

Job responsibilities

Develop an integrated role surrounding the management of vitreo-retinal ophthalmology patients and their families.

Provide a thorough assessment of patients within the clinical setting , ensuring their ophthalmicneeds are met with holistic assessment.

Attend and contribute to departmental meetings, internal and external ophthalmology, and vitreoretinal related focus groups.

Promote high quality clinical care, and assist in the development of the specialist service,through the use of evidence based practice and clinical standards. Develop new skills inresponse to emerging knowledge and techniques.

Complete patient documentation correctly, appropriately and in a timely manner-utilising thenew paperless system and ensuring the rest of the team adopt new electronic systems tosupport the paperless agenda of the Trust.

Person Specification

Education/Professional Registration


  • BSc in Nursing
  • Active full NMC registration


  • PG CERT in ophthalmic nursing



  • Evidence of clinical experience in ophthalmic setting


  • Vitreo Retinal experience

Knowledge & Skills


  • Understanding of the disease process and current treatment and management of vitreo retinal conditions.
  • Able and willing to undertake ophthalmic training/ophthalmic course
