Job Details

The post holder will support the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Colposcopy and Consultant Lead for Colposcopy, with the co-ordination and safe delivery of the Colposcopy Service (in accordance with the standards of the British Society for Colposcopist and Cytopathologists).

They will be trained to facilitate delivery of a quality service and ensure that resources are effectively and efficiently managed. This responsibility includes, equipment management and health & safety within the Colposcopy area as well as ensuring the data entry audits are completed. Integral to the role is ensuring that national standards are adhered to and changes are implemented. Working to agreed protocols and after training the post holder will undertake nurse led smear clinics and colposcopy clinics. They will support the provision of cover for doctor led colposcopy clinics. The role has responsibility to facilitate effective communication links with the Trust multi-disciplinary teams and meet quality assurance standards.

Main duties of the job

The busy Benign Gynaecology Outpatients department is seeking an enthusiastic highly motivated nurse with excellent communication skills to work within the Gynaecology clinic as part of a multi disciplinary team.

The successful candidate must show the ability to undertake the role of Deputy Nurse Colposcopist. This is a training post. You will undertake a training programme as a band 6, leading to a band 7 on completion of the required competencies.

18.75 hours per week

The role involves the management of quality clinical care, and being an advocate for the patient experience. You should be able to demonstrate effective management of resources and the ability to complete a training programme to undertake nurse led colposcopy and smear tests.

The successful candidate must be committed to improving the patient experience and ensuring the high standards we expect for our patients are met. The candidate must be able to demonstrate experience as a gynaecological nurse and a willingness to lead change.

Person Specification



  • Registered Nurse
  • Degree or equivalent with experience
  • Evidence of recent professional development
  • Teaching and mentoring qualification
  • Gynaecology or colposcopy experience
  • Qualified Nurse Coloposcopist (On completion of training)
  • Qualified to undertake smear tests (On completion of training)

Knowledge & Experience


  • Experience in a clinical environment and demonstration of knowledge in relation to providing high standards of patient care and experience
  • Current and up-to-date knowledge and development


  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues such as complaints handling, clinical risk management
  • Evidence of ability to undertake audits
