An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and passionate individual to use their leadership skills to shape the clinical delivery and further development of the established specialist led Plymouth Community Dental Services (PCDS), part of Livewell Southwest.
This is a permanent, full time post, 37.5 hours per week.
You must hold a recognised dentist qualification, be GDC registered, hold a performer number on the NHS Performers List and have a management / leadership qualification or relevant experience.
This is primarily a leadership role but will also provide the postholder opportunity to continue providing clinical care to patients.
As Clinical Lead, the postholder will work autonomously to ensure patients receive the best possible care, and provide direction, guidance and support to clinicians working within the service by providing professional leadership adhering to NHS guidelines and quality standards.
This role provides an opportunity to work in a lovely part of the country, with close proximity to Dartmoor and the coast and be part of a vibrant university city.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Lead is responsible for providing clinical leadership, fostering superior quality patient care and providing for the recruitment and retention of the dental staff for the service. The post holder will work as part of the PCDS Management team, to ensure effective business planning and performance management are in place and represent the service at a range of internal and external meetings where appropriate. The post holder will be expected to lead and support dentists, dental therapists and Oral Health Educators in their provision of comprehensive, advanced clinical care to patients. This post will also include clinical time per week.
The post holder will utilise a balanced and collaborative approach to include the perspective of all disciplines involved in PCDS provision and deliver effective, efficient patient care during required clinical time in compliance with established clinical protocols which could be under sedation and general anaesthesia where appropriate.

Leadership Responsibilities
Holds direct management responsibility for all dental clinicians, to include orientation, development, clinical supervision, evaluation, quality oversight, performance, leave and sickness management and participating in recruitment.
Works as part of the PCDS management team to assist in the creation, development and implementation of dental policies and procedures, which follow the most current accepted professional standards to deliver high quality, high value care for patients.
As part of the management team, always ensures suitable management cover (this could include working outside of normal working hours on occasion)
To act as a role model in the setting of clinical standards providing clinical and leadership support to the wider dental team and service
Represents PCDS on Livewell Southwest Senior Clinical lead team and Medical Advisory Committee and attends these meetings as necessary.
To help engage and empower staff to promote quality, innovation, productivity and prevention and ensure adherence with GDC and CQC standards.
Investigates and resolves patient grievances and complaints regarding quality of care.
Assists in the proposal, decision-making, development, implementation and the evaluation of new clinical processes for PCDS.
To work in partnership with the Dental Service Manager, management team, Dental Board and commissioners to develop services that can appropriately respond to changing economic, political and stakeholder expectations.
Oversees dental rotas for the team in alignment to clinician job plans
Fosters and supports linkages with appropriate specialists, consultants, GDPs and related services.
Demonstrates professional interactions with internal and external customers.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals of various cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Represent PCDS positively to the community.
Provides input into PCDS written reports in dental issues, concerns, clinical status, initiatives and progress as necessary
Serves as the chief clinical contact for internal and external partners and successfully builds, develops and maintains essential partnerships.
To oversee the effective implementation of Clinical Governance and participate in all initiatives and concerns involving patient safety, quality, infection control, risk management and patient service.
Assures a robust peer review and credentialing process, ensuring quality, safety, service, and behavioural issues on the part of the provider to staff are addressed fairly and in a timely fashion.
Working with Dental Specialists, ensure representation at all MCNs and utilising MCN direction of travel to implement plans within specialism areas to provide effective patient care and processes.
Assists in the determination if clinician staffing levels of all grades and oversees the process if clinician recruitment, induction and orientation with HR / medical staffing and recruitment teams.
Determines need and reviews / approves continuing professional development opportunities for dental clinicians.
Makes recommendations to the Dental Service Manager for staff discipline, compliance issues, suspension and termination in accordance with organisational policy.
Ensures completion of clinician performance appraisals in a timely fashion and frequent line management as per policy.
Travels when necessary to fulfil the service needs and attends meetings as necessary to represent PCDS.
Clinical Responsibilities
PCDS includes:
The special care dental service for those with special needs (including those who are highly anxious), urgent care provision for those in dental pain and who do not have a regular dentist, minor oral surgery and routine children (until the age of 16). The service is also commissioned to provide extractions under General Anaesthesia, a Fluoride Varnish programme within local primary schools and undertake epidemiology surveys as requested by Public Health.
The post holder will be expected to undertake on average 2 days per week clinical work in their area / field of expertise in the first instance.
Provide a full range of high-quality treatment in an organised and efficient manner in an area of dentistry to the post holder skills, including use of sedation and general anaesthesia as appropriate.
Provide comprehensive oral health care for acute and chronic problems through treatment with preventive and restorative techniques or through referrals to services beyond the scope of the practice.
Undertake administration associated with these duties including completion of appropriate NHS forms and referrals.
Demonstrates excellent communication skills. Effectively communicates with patients, families and other staff members.
Demonstrates sound judgment and decision-making skills and practices within the post holder's scope of expertise and practice.
Consults with other dentists and physicians appropriately and provide professional advice and support to other healthcare professionals.
Works closely with the Dental Service Manager and Dental Nurse manager to ensure that all resources, equipment and supplies are utilised efficiently and are cost effective.
Responds to organisational needs to leave coverage, office emergencies, chart and forms completion, peer review and other needs in a cooperative fashion.
Stays up to date with CPD and developments in the postholders professional field. Follows clinical guidelines adopted by the service.
Works with Peninsula Dental School to foster and develop student placements including medical and dental students and dental hygienists
Establishes rapport with public and private clinical care referral resources.
Oversees the service GA provision which is led by the Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry with the local acute hospital (UHP)
Oversee the sedation service provision within PCDS which is led by the Sedation Lead
