An exciting opportunity has arisen to create an official Core team within Maternity Assessment unit (MAC)

We are looking for experienced band 6 Midwives with high standards for safety, excellent people skills, who can demonstrate positive leadership skills, are highly motivated and who have a woman centred approach to care.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to lead the team on a daily basis, advocating for women and the staff escalating staffing or acuity concerns in line with the Birmingham Specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTs). You will be required to oversee the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care focused on improving outcome and experiences for parents, families and carers. You will be required to ensure safe and effective clinical practice by maintaining current knowledge, skills, and competencies. You will act as a clinical expert, disseminating specialist skills and knowledge to other staff members. You will demonstrate a caring and compassionate nature, proactive and pragmatic in your work ethos and support with the safety and efficiency of the service to women and their families. You will need to be confident in intrapartum care and obstetric emergencies and lead on training scenarios to support the team and area. Being an acute, fast paced area we will ensure we provide training and exposure on pertinent aspects of the service so you are confident to support women and your colleagues, in what can be a sometimes challenging environment.

You will also need to be flexible, to meet the demands of the service. In MAC, we operate a 24 hr service therefore you will be required to work a variety of 12 hour shifts that include weekends, night duty and public holidays.

Job responsibilities

Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care for women, babies and their families without supervision.

Co-ordinate and facilitate the delivery of care to assist in implementing personalised midwifery care.

Provide expert midwifery advice to midwives, other health care professionals and to women and their families.

To assist in setting, maintaining and improving the standards of midwifery care (this will include assurance work, quality audits and use of quality improvement methods).

Liaise with and maintain good relationships and communication with a multi-professional team.

Escalate when area exceeds safe staffing skill mix or acuity

To seek advice and support from senior colleagues where appropriate

Initiate and participate in research/evidence based practice

To further own professional development and knowledge

Attend mandatory study days

Maintain and develop own personal professional portfolio of learning and development.

Be aware of and participate in Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Clinical Risk strategies, including guidelines and incident reporting

Maintain high standards of documentation following Trust guidelines

Support and action Trust policy regarding HR processes.

Participate in Roster support/finalisation

Person Specification



  • Significant experience as a band 6 registered midwife
  • Sign Off Mentor



  • Excellent verbal and written command of English
  • Supervision of non-registered staff and students
  • Ability to manage staffing and skill mix efficiently and effectively
  • Evidence of team working and positively influencing a team
  • Able to practice in a fully integrated maternity service alongside the multidisciplinary team
  • Can work flexibly within the Core team to ensure department is staffed every shift
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations including non-clinical situations
  • Confident in intrapartum care/ obstetric emergencies
  • Able to contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans
  • Ensures BSOTs prioritised and completed to meet the safety requirements of the department and delays appropriately escalated


  • Involved in research or audit work to support the service



  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Understanding of what the NHS Constitution means to you, and your responsibilities to the public, patients and colleagues.
  • Understanding staff skill mix and acuity to meet the needs of the service
  • Evidence of a research and evidence based approach to practice
  • Able to Mentor and assess midwifery, medical and nursing students
  • Participation and contribution in the maternity service regarding the continuity of care and Better Births agenda
  • Ability to take on additional skills, supporting staff where required for affective/efficient care
  • Able to use and apply IT to complete work based projects, responses and information to support the ward/service
