This is a replacement post funded to improve management of patients with new onset angina, acute coronary syndromes and general cardiology and GIM problems inline with the requirements of the National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease. As the service evolves the role of the Specialty Doctor within the department will be developed by the successful candidate in consultation with the Consultant Cardiologists to include the following elements:

The Specialty Doctor will play an integral part and assist with general cardiology clinics, providing and auditing rapid access Chest Pain Clinics for patients with new onset angina under the direction of the Consultant Cardiologists.

It is envisaged that the Specialty Doctor Cardiologist will play a significant role in the risk stratification and management of patients admitted with acute coronary syndromes. These patients are currently admitted to the acute medical unit (AMU) but improved pathways of care have been identified as a priority, and the opportunity exists to make a major contribution to these new developments.

The postholder will be responsible to Dr Naeem Tahir, Consultant Cardiologist / Physician.

Office accommodation and secretarial support will also be provided.

This post does not include an on call commitment.

Main duties of the job

The Cardiologists are responsible for care of patients in CCU (5 beds) and on the cardiac ward (23 beds) with outliers as required. Facilities are available for electrocardiographic monitoring, temporary and permanent cardiac pacemakers, pulmonary artery pressure monitoring, haemofiltration or ventilation (on ITU). The Department runs a fixed Cardiac Catheter Laboratory for angiography and permanent pacing insertion. The Department also provides EECP treatment and was the first District General Hospital in the country to provide this service.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrate that they have a minimum of four years (FTE or equivalent) of which at least 2 years training must be in the relevant specialty training or equivalent.
  • Broad experience of General Medicine
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients


Desirable

  • Experience of echocardiography ,Nuclear cardiology and temporary pacing


Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a License to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent


Desirable

  • MRCP (including PACES) or equivalent
