Job Details

Assess patients, plans, implements, and evaluates care, carries out nursing procedures, providing advice and maintaining associated records.

Manages staff, including personal development reviews (PDR), rotas, recruitment, and selection.

Supervises junior staff and students.

Promotes positive patient experience, lead on local quality initiatives and explores opportunities for service improvement.

Holds and manages budget.

Leads upon department-based improvement initiatives and actions as part of ward accreditation and audit, ensure the services operates in accordance with both regulatory and legislative requirements associated with the termination of pregnancies.

Contributes to and leads upon quality improvement projects applicable to both the departments of responsibility as well as the Gynaecology Division

Main duties of the job

  • Have overall responsibility and accountability for the management of the Bedford and Early Pregnancy Unit, providing a dynamic leadership role within the team.
  • Ensuring that patients and their families are at the Centre of the ward/ dept philosophy. Ensuring effective communication is maintained.
  • Function at experienced nurse level, able to make effective decisions autonomously / independently without supervision and in partnership with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Support the Matron and wider members of the Divisional Management team in achieving the strategic objectives for the Division and the Trust.

Person Specification



  • Contact with bodily fluids.



  • Degree/masters level qualification and/or equivalent experience
  • Current NMC registration


  • Relevant postregistration qualification



  • Substantial years working as a nurse within gynaecology.
  • Experience of working within early pregnancy / Termination specialist services
  • Proven skills and knowledge in relevant areas
  • Leadership and initiative skills
  • Evidence of ongoing commitment to learning and development


  • Evidence of leading a team
  • Experience of nursing audit



  • Computer literate, able to use word, excel and manage databases.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise
  • Role Model, leader, and team player
  • Able to work autonomously and within the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrates compassion respect and maintain dignity
