The service is looking to recruit a specialist counsellor who will provide valuable input within our recovery oriented drug and alcohol psychology pathway and contribute to the planning and development of the service, in line with the service specifications.

This is a new fixed term role in the service (ending 31st March 2025 but vacancy may be extended dependent on funding) and the main purpose will be to support the delivery of a range of psychological interventions. This will involve assessing and supporting people with substance use problems in their recovery journeys while keeping in mind trauma-informed principles as well as the available clinical evidence

Main duties of the job

As a specialist counsellor, you will bring important relational counselling skills in working with people in drug and alcohol recovery, and you will be familiar with up to date specialist knowledge of latest theoretical and service delivery guidance. You will have a degree in counselling or other related field and be BACP accredited or equivalent.

Specialist counselling will play a key role in enhancing our therapeutic programs and involve working directly with clients accessing our Drug and Alcohol Specialist Psychology Service.

Job responsibilities

As our specialist counsellor, you will:
  • Assess people with substance use problems and undertake client-centred, recovery-based interviews which identify areas where the person wishes to see change and/or recovery and make an accurate assessment of risk to self and others.
  • Make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the ROADS Specialist Psychology Service referral protocols.
  • Develop evidence informed formulations and provide specialist counselling interventions to clients with substance use problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework.
  • Be aware of and keep up to date with advances in drug and alcohol treatment and the treatment of co-occurring conditions.
  • Keep up to date clinical records.

Experience of delivering skills training groups for service users with complex trauma histories would be advantageous but not essential. Knowledge and experience of working with substance misusers is advantageous.

The post holder will be based at Campbell House however he/she may within reason be required to work at or from any of the treatment systems other locations as may be determined from time to times.

Qualification and Critiria


  • Professional registration with BACP, UKCP or equivalent, completion of course clinical requirements


  • Training in additional evidence base therapies, experience in running groups, experience in drug and alcohol
