The post holder will provide Leadership on EBME QMS as well as comprehensive medical device maintenance, repair, commissioning and management services to a wide range of clinical specialties, assist with medical device life cycle management and support the Head of Clinical Engineering in the continuous improvement of department processes, procedures and data quality

Main duties of the job

Assist the EBME Department Manager and Deputise for the role when required.

Take the lead role on managing the medical devices asset register, EBME department information, data, processes, procedures, documentation and administer the department's quality management system.

Providing technical know-how and expertise to colleagues within the department.

Providing support services to specialist areas.

Provide leadership, training and supervision to team members, and coordinate planned and ad-hoc workload.

Support the EBME department manager in setting up and managing external contracts.

Support the Trust medical device safety officer to effectively manage incidents, and take prompt actions on safety alerts.

Train and advise nursing and other staff in the safe use of medical devices.

Organise and update service, operation and instruction procedures.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Provide leadership and manage EBME department documentation, processes and procedures.

Take responsibility of medical devices asset register data and/information validity, accuracy and integrity.

Provide comprehensive administration support to the department Quality Management System.

Provide technical supervision to team members and take a leadership role on all technical issues within the department.

Organise and deliver training to technical, medical and nursing staff in the proper care and use of medical devices and assessing their competency to do so.

Provide technical expertise in the field of biomedical engineering to all team members and to clinicians Trust wide.

Perform a wide range of technical duties on highly complex medical equipment ensuring optimum effectiveness, reliability, availability and safety.

Review other team member jobs and ensure paperwork is completed and correct information is recorded on asset register.

Ensure team members keep their benches and workshop clear, clean and tidy at all times.

To commission, calibrate, maintain and repair a wide range of specialist medical devices e.g. Ultrasound, X-ray, Surgical, Critical Care, Radiotherapy.

Investigate and test medical devices, analysing the results to diagnose faults or problems and rectify them. Demonstrating equipment operation and techniques to individual users where this is a solution to a problem. Communication of investigation results to users, colleagues and suppliers, sharing knowledge and experience.

Using primarily computerised systems, make accurate equipment maintenance history records and other information supporting audit, quality and performance monitoring.

Provide technical supervision to Equipment Library technicians when required, to ensure all aspects of the service are delivered in an efficient, safe, professional and organised way according to departmental policies, procedures and Health and Safety documentation.

Liaise with clinical, technical and management staff to ensure medical devices are deployed and used safely and effectively.

Liaise with medical device suppliers to obtain technical and commercial information in relation to equipment maintenance and servicing.

First line support of instrumentation interfaces to specialist clinical computer systems, liaising with Information Technology to resolve problems as necessary.

Monitor stocks and initiate orders to ensure the timely and follow adequate procurement of medical device parts and accessories to maintain devices in a serviceable condition.

In consultation with the department manager devise and develop planned maintenance schedules.

Take the lead on and propose changes to departmental technical and servicing procedures.

Complete and review equipment and job audits to ensure quality and performance targets are met.

Participation in rostered on-call or shift system as required to deliver the Clinical Engineering service.

Person Specification

Education, Training & Qualifications


  • HNC/HND, B. Eng or BSc. in a technical field, physical science or electronic engineering subject or equivalent vocational qualification.
  • In-depth knowledge of specialist medical equipment and related techniques.
  • Expert knowledge of analogue and digital electronics and associated fault-finding techniques, together with a wide range of relevant training courses.
  • Management training and/or qualification

Knowledge and Experience


  • Substantial experience as a Senior Biomedical Engineer.
  • Extensive post qualification technical experience in repair and maintenance of specialist electronic medical equipment.
  • Extensive experience in scheduling and providing maintenance and repair service for a wide range of specialist medical equipment
  • Experience of working within a quality management system



  • Contemporary technical knowledge in application and use of specialist electro medical equipment.
  • Full understanding and technical knowledge in the testing of patient connected equipment.
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of EBME processes and procedures
  • Fault find on complex medical equipment.

Key Competencies


  • Good understanding and application of Health & Safety at Work and other related legislation as well as a good understanding of risk assessments principles and practices.
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills
  • Sound grasp of Medical Device legislation, management guidance and good practice principles.
  • Ability to work within or lead a team of highly specialist engineers
