This is an exciting opportunity to join and lead the newly formed Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit within the Calderdale Royal Hospital.
As the unit manager of the Medical SDEC Unit (SDEC), you will assume a senior nursing leadership role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the unit and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals with acute medical needs.
You will be responsible for leading a team of registered nurses, healthcare assistants, and support staff, fostering the CHFT one culture of care and embedding a culture within the SDEC unit of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Your strategic vision, clinical expertise, and management skills will be instrumental in optimising efficiency, promoting staff development, and achieving organisational goals and objectives.
The Medical SDEC is a fast-paced working environment, where you will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients. The successful candidates should be able to demonstrate, leadership skill, critical thinking, and effective communication whilst also adhering to established protocols and standards of care.

Main duties of the job
- To be responsible for the day to day running of the Medical SDEC Unit.
- To be responsible for the management/leading of the Medical SDEC nursing workforce.
- To be responsible for staff probationary period management, incident investigations, roster management, assessing students and supporting new starters, appraisals, audits, service improvements and initiatives.
- To participate in the assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised care for medical patients.
- To assist the MDT with providing clear and concise instructions to patients regarding treatment plans, medications, follow-up care, and self-management strategies, promoting patient empowerment and adherence to healthcare recommendations.
- To work collaboratively with all members of the MDT to develop and implement comprehensive care plans tailored to individual patient needs, ensuring continuity of care and effective communication across interdisciplinary teams.
- To monitor patient flow within the SDEC, identifying bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for process improvement, and implementing strategies to optimise throughput, reduce wait times, and enhance the patient experience.
- To recognise changes in patients conditions which require the intervention of others and refer on / escalate as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate and thorough electronic patient records of patient assessments, interventions, responses to treatment, and discharge instructions.
