The department is recruiting to increase the clinical workforce, which is well supported by our advanced practitioner program and a large onsite histology laboratory. Our Cellular Pathology department has a fixed term vacancy for an Specialist grade doctor in Histopathology for a 12 month period.

The appointee will be based at the laboratory of the University Hospital of North Durham (UHND) where the Histology Department concentrates provision of the service (but supports other sites within the Trust, particularly at Darlington).

The post holder will hold or will be working towards the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). As required, the post holder will be supported in their development and completion of CESR. Supervision and training will be provided as needed however a high level of autonomous and independent dissection and reporting of histology slides will comprise the most significant part of their role.

Main duties of the job

The general Histology workload includes a wide range of biopsy types and resection specimens and post is for a general Pathologist at associate specialist grade but there is support for specialised reporting in Skin, Breast and GI pathology aided by Digital pathology all of our consultant grades are specialised/semi specialised. The digital pathology facility will also allow development of flexible and home based work.

The department has introduced Advanced Practitioners in dissection and BMS screening staff to support Consultant staff and the appointee will be involved in their training and development.

The post holder would be expected to work closely with consultants within the Trust, and with Advanced Practice BMS and other lab staff, promoting and maintaining the high quality of these services.

A workload management system is in place based on the recently published RCPath allocation scheme.

Whole-time 10 programmed activities. The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities. There will be an initial discussion with the post holder regarding their job plan, prior to commencement of the appointment.

The post is for a general role as a Specialist grade doctor Histopathology.

The post is based at University Hospital of North Durham ,but the successful applicant will be able to support services on other Trust sites, particularly Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Mortuaries are present both at University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital. The main department is located in a purpose built laboratory at Durham. The directorate provides Pathology services to the Trust and also to the general practitioners in the local area. The department is accredited to the UKAS ISO 15189 standards, moving to UKAS ISO 15189:2022

We are happy to consider specialised working and want new, dynamic team members to bring their skills to further develop a future proof consultant workforce and shared service vision. Although we report a range of general pathology, our expertise and specialism is focused on Breast, GI, gynae, skin pathology aided by Digital pathology.

The department is supportive of all staff and we will provide an opportunity for off-site reporting and flexible working.

We have a strong training culture, with clinical histologist training every year and good experience of developing staff to support completion of training

Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCPath part1 and part 2 completed (or awaiting results)
  • Working towards CESR with evidence of this

  • CESR completed

  • Significant Histopathology experience
  • Working at the the level of autonomy of a Specialist grade doctor Histopathology
  • Experience of working in a clinical post in the NHS is a pre-requisite
