We have a rare opportunity for you to lead our inspirational award-winning Catering team, here at West Suffolk Hospital, as our Catering Services Manager.

You will manage the senior Catering team who along with our chefs and catering assistance provide freshly cooked meals, using seasonally grown ingredients to create nutritious meals for our patients, staff, and visitors.

You will be responsible for taking our Catering department to the next level, and in doing so ensure excellent food and an exemplary customer experience is delivered in a safe compliant, fast-paced, caring environment.


Staff Car Parking on the West Suffolk Hospital Site is eligible for individuals working outside of the core hours, 07:00 - 18:30.

For individuals working within the core hours, the Trust offers parking off site at the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, which is serviced by a regular shuttle bus to and from the Hospital. Details of the bus timetable can be found in the on-line starter pack on the West Suffolk Hospital website.

This parking restriction does not apply if an individual is required to work on a weekend or if they are required to complete on call duties within their role.

Main duties of the job

Responsibility for the overall management of the Catering department at West Suffolk Hospital. Including compliance with all food safety and hygiene regulations.

Responsible for all Catering staff, making sure sufficient training is provided to the appropriate levels and standards.

Responsible for departmental adherence to all Trust policy and procedures.

Have Budget responsibility for both Pay and non-pay cost, relating to the catering department and in doing so stay within prescribed budgetary limits.

Ensure our patients Dietary and Allergen requirements are met as appropriate.

Ensuring the safe preparation, cooking, and serving of all foods to patients, staff, and visitors.

Providing high quality hospitality Catering for internal events.

Providing excellent customer service to patients, families, and colleagues.

Ensuring National standards for healthcare food and drink are adhered to.

Being proactive and forward thinking in the provision of our food service for our patient's, staff, and visitors.

Actively promote our food Service, Planning theme days, including provided a Christmas dining experience for our staff

Job responsibilities


The post holder will be a Senior member of the Estates & Facilities Soft Services team, with responsibility for the leadership and management of theCatering services.

The post holder has leadership, managerial and professional responsibility for the above services on behalf of the Trust. The post holder holds line management responsibility for the staff in those department.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the Catering services are effectively resourced, have clear policies to deliver a high quality, safe service with robust governance to give assurance from Ward to Board in respect of national standards and statutory compliance.

The post holder will act as the Trusts expert in these areas, and in doing so provide specialist and professional expertise to clinicians, senior managers, and other staff throughout the Trust.

The post holder will formulate and deliver operational objectives whilst ensuring the provision of a comprehensive and efficient service working on behalf of patients, visitors, and staff.

The post holder will be expected to review and evaluate the operational effectiveness of those areas for which responsibility is held. To lead on any changes as part of the review process and the implementation of innovative solutions that support the Trusts Objectives.

Accountable for the delivery against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), service developments and supportand the departmental Business Plan. Lead on the provision of services to sustain future strategies and development for those areas of responsibility.

Responsible for resource management to specified targets and standards in line with the Trusts business plan and national targets.

Responsible for compliance with the NHS - National Standards for Healthcare Food and Drink 2022.

Support the Head of Facilities as part of the Senior Soft Services Management Team.

Person Specification

Educaion & Qualification


  • Recognised Professional Qualification in catering services
  • Educated to or experience equivalent to city and guilds l in food and catering
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development


  • Diploma in Professional Cookery (Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3)
  • Advance food hygiene

Experience & Knowledge


  • Successful track record of working in an Estates & Facilities role within an environment of comparable scale and complexity
  • Experience of Line Management of Diverse Staff Groups
  • Experience of leading in Soft-Facilities Management
  • Experience of delivering value for money / efficiency related changes
  • Successful track record of working in high performing teams, delivering challenging targets and achieving results.


  • Be conversant with relevant Standards (Cleaning, Catering, Security)
  • Experience/knowledge of working in a health service environment.
