Main duties of the job

There are bank assignments all around the Trust, including our community settings in Haltwhistle, Berwick, Alnwick, Morpeth, Rothbury, Blythas well as our main hospitals in Hexham, Ashington, North Tyneside and Cramlington. We have a range of shifts 7 days per week including day shifts, earlies, lates, twilight, nights and weekends. With bank you can pick and choose which shifts suit you.

To develop/improve/maintain/manage communication/swallowing/feeding skills of adults/ children in a given location, through direct intervention, liaison and joint working with other staff and carers and across agencies, to maximise their potential/ reduce risk and enable their maximum participation and integration into society

Specifically to:
  • Independently assess, diagnose and treat own specialised caseload of patients/clients and maintain associated records.
  • Participate in research in the specialist area.
  • Advise and provide clinical support to other therapists/staff on SLT issues.
  • Supervise the work of assistants/volunteers and others working with the post holder.
  • Contribute to the induction, mentoring and support of other more junior staff and may be required to facilitate clinical case discussions as part of peer review.
  • Take full SLT student placements, contributing to their assessment and examination.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To demonstrate specialist knowledge in clinical specialism underpinned by current evidence based practice
  • To manage caseload independently
  • To make specialist clinical decisions following assessment of complex cases
  • To identify personal/professional development evidenced by Personal Development Plan/ Professional Portfolio developed within an appraisal framework
  • To participate in Individual Performance Review ensuring that the objectives set reflect the Service and Trust plans, including specific objectives relating the clinical specialism
  • To attend relevant training and development in order to maintain and develop skills and knowledge required of a specialist therapist working in the field of Speech and Language Therapy and maintain up to date HCPC and RCSLT registration
  • To attend specialist short courses appropriate to clinical specialism
  • To demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to RCSLT professional and clinical and national and local clinical guidelines
  • To participate in the development of local clinical guidelines informed by evidence of clinical specialism
  • To participate in the development and delivery of specialist training (formal and informal) to a range of professionals and others in area of clinical expertise with and without support
  • To keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good practice in specialist area
  • To provide advice to non-specialists and other specialists/ professionals within clinical field
  • To attend relevant courses, meetings and Clinical Excellence Networks
  • To develop a working knowledge of relevant procedures including safeguarding and other legal frameworks
  • To develop a working knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and their application to professional practice


Person Specification

Qualifications/Professional Registration

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree qualification or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • o Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses


Other

Essential

  • It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes
