An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Oral Health Promoter to work within our friendly and enthusiastic Community Dental Team.

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated Oral Health Promoter to assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of oral health programmes which will raise the awareness and improve the oral health of people living within Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

The post holder will have a background in oral health education with evidence of continuous professional development and teaching skills. They will have excellent communication skills and have the ability to work under pressure working well within a team and have the skills to work autonomously. They must hold current registration with the GDC, a recognised dental nurse qualification along with a qualification in oral health education or equivalent, with proven track record of delivering oral health interventions.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to playing a leading role in delivering the oral health promotion to the population across Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland. As part of the role you will be expected to introduce and facilitate Oral Health Promotion programmes, at a variety of settings, dependent on the assigned programme, this may include nurseries, schools, community, care home, health and other settings

You will assist with the planning, delivery and evaluation of oral health programmes and projects, which reflect national and local policy guidance. Work together with carers and other professionals within NHS and Local Authority to develop programmes of care and offer specialised advice, support and training on mouth care for individuals and client groups

You will participate in the planning, implementation and delivery of programmes of local activity including local campaigns, exhibitions and media promotion to support national campaigns of public awareness regarding oral health issues i.e. National No smoking Day, National Smile Month, Mouth Cancer Action.

Job responsibilities

To assist in the development, effective and efficient implementation, delivery and evaluation of oral health promotion programmes to raise awareness and improve the oral health of people living within Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland.


Person Specification



  • Oral Health Promotion Qualification i.e. National Certificate in Dental Health Education or BTEC National in Oral Health Promotion
  • National Certificate for Dental Nurses or NVQ level 3 in dental nursing
  • Adult teaching certificate (or a willingness to undertake within 6 months of employment)
  • Registration with the General Dental Council


  • Certificate in the Application of Fluoride Varnish



  • Experience in face to face delivery of oral health interventions with small and larger groups
  • Experience of delivering power point presentations


  • Experience of delivery of on-line training

Skills and Knowledge


  • Knowledge and experience in principles and practices of all aspects of oral health promotion
  • Ability to network and build effective and co-operative working relationships across internal and external stakeholders
  • Possess comprehensive I.T skills and ability to use word, excel, power point and desk top publishing

Physical skills


  • Car driver essential and must be able to meet the travel requirements to fulfil the role
