The post-holder will be a member of the Sleep team within the Sleep-Breathing Disorders Unit at Bristol Royal Infirmary. The unit covers a wide geographical area and provides diagnostic and therapeutic services in line with NICE NG202. We undertake a range of diagnostic tests including oximetry, respiratory polygraphy, polysomnography MSLT/MWT and Actigraphy. We have 10,000 patients on auto-CPAP and have close links with Bristol Dental Hospital for MAD devices and the ENT department at UHBW.
You will lead the service, managing the day-to-day running of the service.
Additionally, you will undertake outpatient sleep clinic work assessing new and follow-up patients and planning and reviewing their diagnostic and therapeutic pathways as appropriate. Some late-shift work, setting up polysomnography studies etc, may be required.

Main duties of the job
Independently review patients referred to the sleep service, in both a new and follow-upcapacity. This includes:
Plan, perform, interpret and report a range of basic and highly complex Sleep Study investigations. and where appropriate initiate subsequent management.
This includes -
Perform 1:1 CPAP set-ups for patients with additional and/or complex needs.Support multidisciplinary staff on the use and type of CPAP equipment for acute and elective admissions,both within and outside the Trust, including set-up, assessment and evaluation of therapy as required.
Triage new referrals to the sleep service Provide DVLA reports as requested (HCPC registrant only)
To support, in conjunction with the other Senior Physiologists the day-to-day management of the workforce

- Determining appropriate treatment for sleep disordered breathing, including CPAP and mandibular advancement device
- Review of patients established on CPAP
Plan, perform, interpret and report a range of basic and highly complex Sleep Study investigations. and where appropriate initiate subsequent management.
This includes -
- Respiratory Polygraphy (including WatchPAT)
- Polysomnography
- Actigraphy
- MSLT/MWT
- Capillary and transcutaneous blood gas monitoring
Perform 1:1 CPAP set-ups for patients with additional and/or complex needs.Support multidisciplinary staff on the use and type of CPAP equipment for acute and elective admissions,both within and outside the Trust, including set-up, assessment and evaluation of therapy as required.

- BSc/BA in Clinical Physiology or an appropriate subject or equivalent international qualification
- AHCS or HCPC Registered (or application pending) or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Working within a sleep-breathing disorders service or a relevant associated field
- Undertaking analysis and reporting of complex and highly complex advanced specialist assessments, including polysomnography, and providing outcome advice
- Formal/informal teaching to a range of healthcare practitioners, patients, and patient groups
- Management/supervision and co-ordination and training of junior and trainee staffs and the development of in-house training programmes
- Independently undertaking sleep outpatient clinics, specifically in the assessment, review and management of follow-up patients
- Working within a multidisciplinary team (MDT)
Desirable
- Participation in research, service evaluation and clinical audit
Skills and Abilities
Essential
- A combination of frequent light physical effort (carrying equipment 2 - 10 kg), occasional moderate physical effort (moving morbidly obese patients in wheelchairs) and frequent standing, kneeling or sitting in a restricted position
- Highly developed physical skills where accuracy and/or speed are essential, and may include manipulation of fine tools, obtaining arterial/capillary blood gases or the assembly of specific complex circuitry
- Ability to work within known policies and national/international guidelines (AASM, ARTP, BSS, BTS, ERS/ATS, NICE etc), making appropriate judgements within the multidisciplinary team
