We are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual to join our team, at Isle of Wight Maternity services as our new Head of Midwifery. Are you an exceptional midwife looking for an opportunity to progress into an important senior midwifery role? We are looking for a dynamic and motivated midwife who will provide inspirational and positive professional leadership working closely with the Director of Midwifery.

Across the Isle of Wight we have around 1000 births. A very exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Head of Midwifery on a permanent contract. The successful applicant will be provided with an individualised leadership and coaching programme, supported by the Director of Midwifery.

Main duties of the job

As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Head of Midwifery will provide guidance, support and leadership to midwifery and support staff to ensure patient safety, service quality and excellent patient experience is consistently monitored and maintained in all maternity settings.

Through responsive leadership you will act as a strong patient advocate ensuring that a culture of continuous improvement and development is supported in order to drive quality care delivery across the service.

With professional integrity, wisdom and compassion you will support the Director of Midwifery to promote a culture where all staff thrive to participate in growing change to provide maternity services where women/birthing people and their families are at the heart of all decisions. We have an excellent relationship with our Maternity Voices Partnership and you will be instrumental in co-designing developments and co-create solutions based on maternal feedback and views.

Person Specification

Qualifications and role specific knowledge


  • Current Midwifery registration/nursing registration desirable.
  • Degree level education or equivalent.
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience.
  • A clear understanding of leadership and team dynamics, including what factors make a successful organisation.
  • An understanding of all staff groups and agencies/stakeholder across the health community
  • A clear understanding of the interface between organisations.
  • A clear understanding of and commitment to the current and changing agenda within the NHS.
  • Ability to think strategically and analyse complex problems and interact in a complex multidisciplinary organisation.
  • Holds a masters degree or evidence of working and undertaking study at level
  • Has the relevant managerial and operational experience
  • Evidence of working at a strategic level with external partners LMNS, ICB,CQC, HSIB


  • Recent and proven experience of operationally leading and managing complex services.
  • Risk Management Training/ qualification or relevant experience

Physical Skills


  • Working in an environment which demands high levels of energy, stamina and enthusiasm.

  • Management of all staff disciplines, undertaking individual development and performance reviews, managing sickness and capability issues.

  • Workforce planning, recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Working under pressure, prioritising work and meeting deadlines.
  • Work without direct supervision to achieve the objectives of the post.

Communication Skills


  • Utilise a variety of advanced communication skills in order to communicate to a range of different audiences clearly and succinctly verbally, electronically and in writing.
  • Being a highly credible leader who is able to command respect.
  • Analysing complex information and/or situations and finding appropriate solutions/resolutions, identify priorities for action and make decisions in the best interest of the service and users.
