HMP Bedford is a Category B prison for adult males over the age of 18 years. It is a local and remand prison with a population capacity of 380.

The post holder will oversee HMP Bedford Substance Misuse Team to ensure the provision of research based high quality care to residents with substance misuse concerns in accordance with local and national policies.

The post holder will demonstrate leadership qualities and set an example to the team through their own behaviour and attitude at all times.

The post holder will oversee the provision of day to day substance misuse services and general healthcare services in the absence of the other clinical leads

The post holder will participate in audits, research and project work as requested.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring supervision, appraisals and mandatory training is completed in line with NHFT policies.

The post holder will develop and support the concept of change, contributing ideas whilst demonstrating awareness of issues.

Main duties of the job

  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and set an example to all staff through their own behavior and attitude at all times.
  • Report and be responsible to the Head of Healthcare and represent them at meetings as required.
  • Oversee the provision of day to day substance misuse services, general healthcare services and pain management in the absence of the other clinical leads
  • Be responsible for ensuring supervision, appraisals and mandatory training is completed in line with NHFT policies.
  • Ensure staffs adhere to Trust policies, procedures and standards and work within the guidelines of the NMC code of conduct at all times.
  • Organise own workload and manage time effectively.
  • Attend multi - agency and multi- disciplinary meeting, both internally and externally, representing Healthcare and NHFT in a professional manner
  • Participate in formulating and reviewing healthcare standards and objectives.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:
  • Lead the substance misuse team to ensure the delivery of safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient care to residents.
  • Work in close conjunction with the primary care, mental health, and psychosocial teams to provide holistic care.
  • Provide advice to members of the team on the management of complex substance misuse issues.
  • Utilise a wide range of communication skills, treating residents with respect and empathy at all times.
  • Actively participate in and support clinical audit and clinical governance systems at a local level, including the collection of data.
  • Undertake risk assessments and take appropriate professional action when the nature of the behaviour, symptoms or illness is likely to lead to self-harm or injury to others.

Ensure nursing practice is fully reflected in the use of the Trust electronic record system.

Person Specification

Essential

  • NMC registration
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good communication skills
  • Able to risk assess, triage and manage complex services
  • Drive to manager change, develop services, and meet the ISMS strategy


Desirable

  • Substances misuse experience working within the field
  • Prison knowledge/experience
  • RCGP Level 1 qualification
  • Certificate in Leadership/Management
  • RCGP Level 2 qualification
  • NMP
