Job Details

The Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) is the largest and oldest gender clinic in the UK, dating back to 1966. We accept referrals from all over the UK for adults with issues related to gender. We accept referrals for patients who are aged 17 years and older onto our waiting list. Patients will not be offered an appointment before their 18th birthday.

We are a multi-disciplinary team, including psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists, speech and language therapists, and nurses.Wework together to provide holistic gender care, focusingon the biological/medical, psychologicalandsocial aspects of gender.

No specific specialty training is required to fulfil the clinical role. Individuals from a variety of medical or psychiatric backgrounds may have knowledge and skills relevant to the role, such as psychiatric or psychosexual assessment, hormonal management of endocrine disorders and menopause or experience in sexual and reproductive health and genitourinary medicine.

There is recognition that a successful candidate may not have the full breadth of knowledge and expertise required to fulfil the clinical role initially, especially if they have not worked in a gender identity clinic in the past. If this was the case, a period of induction and additional support from colleagues would be available. On-going peer support is available from the consultants in the team.

Main duties of the job

This role is to ensure that physical health needs of patients on hormone treatment are taken into account. In partnership with other members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), the role supports patients' safe progression through the pathway, co-ordinating liaison with the patient, GPs, practice nurses and other healthcare professionals. This will involve facilitating and following up on appropriate and regular monitoring of hormone therapy with patients and GPs to coordinate the monitoring and management of hormone therapy, and running nurse-led clinics to review progress and health and wellbeing on hormone therapy whilst also providing a check-in service and additional point of contact with the GIC between core appointments.
