Job Details

Health Innovation Manchester is responsible for accelerating innovation into health and social care to improve the health and wellbeing of the citizens of Greater Manchester (GM). We do this by bringing together researchers, academics, clinicians, and industry to discover, develop and deploy innovations into the health and care system.

The Communications Team is responsible for promoting GM as the place to conduct world leading research and deploy innovations, as well as providing communications support to the rollout of projects across the geography.

Working closely with the Head of Communications, you will be integral in providing expert communications advice and support, with responsibility for developing and delivering key strategies to deliver high-profile GM-wide campaigns, maximise PR and media opportunities, drive impactful social media content, and evaluate the impact of our communications activity in achieving HInM's vision and business objectives.

Main duties of the job

In particular, this role will be responsible for delivering communications around the Innovate UK funded Health Innovation Accelerator programme - established to rapidly improve the diagnosis and treatment of disease across the 2.8m Greater Manchester population.

You will also oversee the daily management and continued strong performance of a small team, providing guidance, supervision and personal development support.

Job responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement/External Affairs:

Outstanding communication skills to enable and support the Head of Communications to develop content and proactive opportunities to increase contact with identified stakeholder groups/opinion formers.

Lead in enhancing HInMs proactive and reactive media relations management, including providing guidance and training to the senior leadership team and all HInM colleagues.

Work with communications colleagues across the NHS, councils, Universities and industry partners to identify and secure media opportunities.

Work closely with the Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Team to identify opportunities for collaboration and feature real life patient stories in our communications activity to increase authenticity.

Internal Communications:

Work with the communications and corporate services to develop timely, engaging and relevant communications for all staff groups including looking at new channels and opportunities to reach staff quickly.

Develop strong relationships with staff at all levels of the organisation this will require strong communication and influencing skills in order to convey complex information to a challenging and diverse audience.

Digital and Social Media:

Proficient in use of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn to promote and monitor the HInM profile.

Play a leading role in developing HInMs digital and social media plan strategy to increase followers, improve engagement, produce and maintain original content and enhance the programme portfolio.

Leadership and Management:

Provide line management to the Senior Communications Officer and Communications Officer providing leadership, mentoring, coaching and personal development planning, guided by policies and establish interpretation.

Provide day-to-day operational management and support to all members of the Communications team to ensure priorities are met and delivered to a consistent professional standard.

Monitor and ensure that all relevant functions, projects and programmes are delivered within the budgets agreed with the Head Director of Communications.

Corporate Communications:

Work with the Head of Communications to develop, implement and evaluate integrated communications strategies to support HInMs objectives and business priorities.

Develop an annual communications plan and engaging communications activity/campaigns to promote how HInM and its system partners are delivering innovation into frontline care that is having an impact on peoples lives and improving outcomes, as well as positioning Greater Manchester as being at the leading edge of health innovation, research and life sciences.

Oversee delivery of impactful communications plans and campaigns that support HInMs range of innovation programmes and projects, with a particular emphasis on national projects and those derived by the Greater Manchester system.

PR and Media Management:

Provide experienced crisis communications handling advice on often complex and sensitive issues and deputise for the Head of Communications where appropriate, including leading the communications response in the event of a major incident.

  • Educated to degree level in a related field and ideally a relevant postgraduate qualification e.g. CIM or other

  • Strong track record in delivering communications campaigns with the results to back up the activity


Desirable

  • An understanding of how the NHS works in Greater Manchester and how digital and innovation in health are key to its future success


Experience

Essential

  • Experience in a similar communications role in industry, health or the wider public sector
