The West Cornwall Hospital has 2 theatres we have many specialities including Urology, Hands, Gynaecology / Gynae Oncology, ENT and Ophthalmology.

We are a diverse team who work round the clock to support the community of Cornwall plus all our many visitors.

As a unit we recognise that there is a need to ensure that the peri-operative patients are cared for by a group of professionals that have the appropriate specialist knowledge and skill set to assess, implement and evaluate patients with related care interventions. You must be able to demonstrate good communication skills and work closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and meet the person specification.

Main duties of the job

This role is expected to fulfil expectations as Theatre Scrub/ODP Practitioner in Theatres.

To work as a skilled member of the theatres team, providing knowledgeable assistance to operating surgeons and surgical teams during the full intraoperative pathway.

To deliver high quality patient care and the management of patients during procedures performed under general, regional and local anaesthetic.

To develop skills and speciality-based knowledge to support surgical practice in Theatres following rotation plan in Theatres.

To provide a high standard of compassionate patient-centred care.

To lead and supervise the work of other qualified and unqualified staff within the team.

To communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team.

To be able to take charge of the given shift for a surgical operating list and a group of patients in the absence of senior nursing staff, as deemed appropriate by the Person-in-charge or Clinical Matron.

Job responsibilities

Knowledge and skill acquired during a programme leading to professional registration with either NMC or HPCP. Specialist training will be provided.

Understanding of and competence in theatre practice in a multi-speciality environment.

Knowledge and understanding of routine observations of physiological measurements, and the ability to recognise those outside the normal range.

Knowledge and demonstrable ability to accurately document patient observations and care given.

Knowledge and competence in basic life support ( adult and paediatric ).

Demonstrable ability to support surgical procedures in the emergency situation.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients in potentially distressing situations and colleagues in support of patient care.

Maintain own professional registration and practice within the NMC / HPC

Code of Professional Conduct.
