An exciting opportunity has arisen for three Apprentice Operating Department Practitioners to train within our operating theatre.

The Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner post is a three year degree course run by the University of Central Lancashire. All academic work will be carried out the Preston campus and the clinical work will be carried out at either the Carlisle or West Cumberland operating theatre department.

Main duties of the job

The Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner will follow the UCLAN ODP degree syllabus.

We have 10 theatres at Carlisle and 7 at West Cumberland, covering a variety of specialties: Trauma & Orthopaedics, Vascular, Colorectal, Upper GI, Urology, ENT, Maxillo-Facial, Gynaecology, and Obstetrics. All clinical training will be carried in these theatres working alongside designated mentors. The training covers all three disciplines of work in the theatre departments anaesthetics, recovery and scrub.

At the end of the 3 year degree course there will be the opportunity to apply for a job in one of the 3 disciplines.

Disclosure and Barring Service:

On 28 November 2020, the new Disclosure and Barring Service filtering rules will come into effect.

The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

Standard Check: �18 + Administration cost of �3.85 = �21.85. Deducted at �6.85 from 1st month salary and �5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Enhanced Check: �38 + administration cost of �3.90 = �41.90. Deducted at �11.90 from 1st month salary and �10 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Recent experience working in an acute healthcare setting


Qualifications

  • GCSE or equivalent in Maths
  • GCSE or equivalent in English language
  • Undertake and complete the Operating Department Practitioner Apprenticeship.
